Whalebone Classic - 2008/07/15 09:08
Whalebone Classic - Dane Pioli wins in the west to record back to back ASP Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) wins and claim the 2008 ratings title Monday, 14 July 2008
A small increase in swell during the final day saw the 11th Annual Whalebone Classic conclude with epic surfing in the final of the Multiplex Living 9ft Pro. With Rahn Goddard and Jock Bahen both from Cottesloe representing the West and Dane Pioli, Wollongong and Jared Neal, Emerald Beach representing the East it was always going to be a classic show down.
Earlier in the day Pioli and Goddard disposed of Paul Scholten, Woolgoolga and Ben Proudfoot, Cottesloe in meagre 2ft conditions in semi final 1 while Bahen and Neal progressed from semi final 2 at the expense of Tim Fitzpatrick and current World Longboard Tour series leader Harley Ingleby.
Pioli took advantage of the increasing swell to open his account with a 7.67 score that was the highest scoring wave in the final which he backed up 4 waves later with an equally impressive 7.07 for a combined total of 14.74 which left the other surfers always chasing him. “I wasn’t sure of how many points I needed to win the ASP Australasian Longboard Qualifying Series so I figured if I have a win today I would probably overtake series leader Josh Constable,” Pioli said when asked what was the motivating factor in his win.
Runner up to Pioli was Rahn Goddard who yesterday disposed of 2006 World Champion, Noosa’s Josh Constable and continued to show a new mature approach to his surfing which is sure to see him feature in more pro events around the world in future. Goddard’s score of 12.60 came from his opening ride of 6.00 and his 5th ride which was a 6.60
Having to settle for 3rd Jock Bahen with a score of 11.73 continued to ride a heavy board that had been given to him years earlier and been snapped 3 times over the years. “It’s the best board for these conditions. I’ve ridden it all weekend. It’s my old faithful,” said Bahen when asked what his tactics would be.
Jared Neal couldn’t find the form that saw him make the final and had to settle for 4th with a score of 10.27 from his best two waves.
