ASP WQS Situation Room – Monday, August 25, 2008
Bang! We have what looks like our first, possibly our second, qualifiers for next year’s elite ASP World Tour. The ASP WQS 6-Star Rip Curl Pro in Hossegor completed last weekend and the massive points on offer shook up the ratings more than a Cuban Tae Kwan Do fighter in Beijing. Congratulations to Chris Davidson (AUS), who scalped his second big win of the year, and with the ASP WQS 6-Star Buondi Billabong Pro in Ericeira, Portugal starting this week, look for the hits to keep on coming. Read on to see who is in, who is trucking right along and who needs to go back to night school.

RIP: Midget Smith
The surfing world has lost one of its greatest icons this past weekend in the passing of Californian Jeffrey “Midget” Smith. A decorated and long-time competitor, shaper and ASP judge, Smith embodied all that was right in the surfing world and his dedication to the sport in the water, the shaping bay and the judging tower go unparalleled in surfing history. The sport has lost one of its legends, but the people who ever had the privilege to meet him are that much better because of it. RIP Jeffrey ‘Midget’ Smith.
Dingo’s Engagement Party
Last weekend was ASP Top 45 ripper Dean Morrison and new fiancée Alana Brennan’s engagement party at Bread & Butter in Kirra. The 80-person gig allegedly included sterling performances from fellow Dream Tour standouts Joel Parkinson, Mick Fanning and Luke Munro on a special Karaoke machine that was acquired specifically for the festivities.
