Molokai Challenge - 2008/07/17 21:38
Aloha all We have had to change the dates as Molokai is sold out with accommodations for the 16th, and being that only a handful of people booked rooms, we felt that this would be a problem. We have also had website server issues, so the communication was not the greatest. The new dates are: Saturday 30th August. Please spread the word, read the entry requirements and call or email me with any questions. We are still searching for sponsors. Please book rooms through myself or Hotel Molokai directly. We have only one hotel on island and rooms are limited. We also have Molokai Shores so please book NOW!!! Look forward to seeing you on Molokai. A race for charity is how the Molokai Challenge will run for 2008. The date: Saturday 30th August 2008. The location is to be determined. At this point, somewhere along the Ka’anapali Shoreline, to Napili on Maui, Hawaii to finish up on Molokai, Hawaii. OPEN TO ALL NON MOTORIZED OCEAN CRAFT, a challenge of endurance, strength and stamina. Why do we call it a challenge? A name that has been adopted over the years but ultimately the event is to challenge the individuals and teams in creating awareness to the Youth about the wonderful opportunities that are presented to the next generation. This event is just the one of many different future events that can highlight opportunities for the youth.
Youth In Motion’s ultimate goal is to bring youth and adults together to participate in this race with the message of YIM’s mission statement and to encourage the youth to take charge of a destiny filled with positive opportunities. No matter what club or association that any individual, adult or youth may belong to, Youth In Motion’s goal is to help with the strengthening of those organizations through events such as this to help raise the level of awareness that can present opportunities to not just the local community but throughout the world as we celebrate a “Celebration of Youth Opportunities”.
This years event will be based on team participation and each team will need to form their own rescue and submit the details to Clare Mawae. One week prior the departure location will be announced to those that have formed and registered their teams.
For more information please contact Clare Seeger Mawae preferably by email: clare@molokai-outdoors.com or call 808-336-0946 or 808-553 4227 in how to participate and or contribute to the event.

Re:Molokai Challenge - 2008/08/30 09:26
The Molokai Challenge is on for Saturday 30th August 2008. For those in the press that are unsure what the Molokai Challenge is about please contact Clare Seeger Mawae for more details.
The registered divisions will be:
Standup Paddle board
Windsurf
Tandem windsurf
Kite boarders
This event is about our Youth and a big special Thanks you goes to Elle Cochran from Maui and in the Stand up Paddle Board Division raising over $1400 for Youth In Motion. So far Elle is the leader in the race for raising the most money. Following close behind her is our late entry as of Tuesday this week, 12 year old Zane Schweitzer who will also be Elle’s team mate in the Stand up Paddle Board Division. Zane has raised over $250 in two days and the money is still coming in.
One the other side of the race, Archie Kalepa from Maui and a fellow paddler are going for a record breaking time in the crossing from Maui to Molokai in the SUP division. The stop watch will be running for a record to be beaten in future years to come.
For this year 2008 each division has a limit of two teams due to the shortage of rescue and escort boats and times will be set and records to be broken for 2009.
The ultimate purpose of the event is not just the mission statement of Youth In Motion but a race for charity creating awareness and opportunities for the youth. How much can the participants raise, how can they inspire and how can they pave the way for future youth to step up to the plate and follow their dreams?
There is room for a couple of photographers on the press boat departing Molokai early Saturday morning and picking up Maui press in Lahaina.
Want to be part of the challenge and support this event then please contact Clare Seeger Mawae to either report the event or to receive the final results of the Molokai Challenge 2008, in celebrating
‘A Celebration of Youth Opportunities’.

Molokai Challenge 2008
A Celebration of Youth Opportunities
Presented By Youth In Motion
Saturday 30th August 2008
The 6th Annual Molokai Challenge hosted by Youth In Motion was held from DT Flemings Beach, Maui to Kamalo on Molokai. This year event director Clare Seeger Mawae introduced Stand up paddle board division that was spearheaded with the same drive as Clare by Elle Cochran from Maui. Elle’s belief in the event drove the event to a new level of awareness as she raised over $1400 for the Molokai Youth. Elle’s team mates 14 year old Zane Schweitzer and his Mom Shawneen made up their three man team with Zane taking the pace to another level. His determination and perseverance is what this event is all about. Zane is an inspiration to youth and hopefully there is someone out there that may find something that they are inspired to do by what Zane had done today. Not only did he paddle across the channel he raised money too.
In the past years Zane has competed in the challenge by windsurfing across but for 2008 he wanted to do some thing different in trying out SUP. Four hours later Elle, Zane and Shawneen made it across the channel not only with an accomplishment of doing this but with a check of $1800 donated to Youth In Motion. Elle quoted that “If someone would have asked me to race across to Molokai, I would say you must be crazy. Why would I want to do that?” The next question posed to Elle asking if she would do this to help create awareness for Youth and at the same time raise money for a charity of her choice and the Molokai Youth. Elle’s response, “Sign me up.”
Archie Paleka, a Maui county Lifeguard also participated in this years challenge setting the pace for the new division and the first to cross to Molokai.
In the windsurf division, tandem sailors Jace Panebianco and Doug Miller set off from Flemings in marginal conditions and again set the stage for fundraising in the future. The other kiters and windsurfers were plagued with lack of consistent winds and chose to take the event with the spirit of ‘A Celebration of Youth Opportunities,’ keeping safety as the main priority. As Rob Mastroyanni and his team said, “There is always next year and we will raise a lot more money now that we truly understand the concept of the event.”
Overall despite the marginal conditions, the event was a success inspiring those that participated whether on land or in the ocean to make 2009 a memorable crossing. For 2009 the divisions will be again open to all non motorized craft to cross the channel to Molokai celebrating Youth that is defined in the Youth In Motion’s mission statement:
"Empower, Equip, Educate, Challenge and Motivate Youth through activities that engage and develop their mental, emotional and physical skills on the land and in the ocean."
