ASP News - 2008/09/18 21:09 ASP World Title Situations
Well, we’ve just seen an incredible event at the Boost Mobile Pro pres. by Hurley at Lower Trestles and Kelly Slater has won his 5th event of the season. While he may be the runaway ratings leader on the 2008 ASP World Tour, the Floridian hasn’t clinched his 9th Title...not yet anyway.

When in Rio…
Well, the ladies of the ASP Top 17 have had a couple of lay days competition at the Billabong Girls Pro Rio, event No. 4 of 8 on the 2008 ASP Women’s World Tour, but that hasn’t stopped them from keeping busy. From climbing to the top of Rio to hang with Giant Jesus and take in the sites to donating boards and equipment to those less fortunate in the local favelas, the girls of the Dream Tour are becoming a regional hit in Rio De Janeiro and it’s exciting to see the community embrace them.

ASP Sweeps Surfer Poll
The ASP had a banner night tonight, dominating the 35th Annual Surfer Poll Awards in fine fashion. The reader-voted awards yielded none other than eight-time ASP World Champion and runaway ratings leader on this season’s ASP World Tour Kelly Slater (USA), 36, and former ASP Women’s World Champion and current No. 2 on the ASP Women’s World Tour Sofia Mulanovich (PER), 25, in their respective top spots. A staggering 9 out of the top 10 men were made up of current ASP World Tour campaigners and a solid 3 out of the top 5 women were comprised of current ASP Women’s World Tour campaigners.

ASP WQS Situation Room - Monday, September 15, 2008
Despite a relatively quiet week on the ASP WQS, it looks as though we have determined our third qualifier for the 2009 ASP World Tour. The ASP WQS 5-Star Rip Curl Pro Zarautz has wrapped up the lengthy summer European leg, and congratulations to France’s Tim Boal whose victory in Zarautz bumped him into the No. 3 position and looks assured for a Dream Tour berth next season. This week provides a bit of a breather in terms of high-rated ’QS events, but we’ll still see the ASP WQS 2-Star Oakley NB Pro go down in California.

Check Your Baguettes at the Door
Hello kids, well you’d be hard-pressed not to bet on Mr. Slater these days. The Floridian phenom has netted an astounding five ASP World Tour wins this year and has only been beaten by one fellow ASP Top 45 surfer in 2008 (high five Tiago!). In any event, if you’re a Slater backer, that still leaves another seven surfers you need to choose for the idyllic beachbreaks of Southwestern France. Will it be stonking sandbar barrels or playful thin-lipped runners? Who will you pick?
