9X Kelly Slater, 36, has won a record ninth ASP World Title after advancing out of Round 3 of the Billabong Pro Mundaka – the ninth event of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour. Slater came into the event needing an equal ninth finish to clinch the title, he secured that by beating local wildcard Eneko Acero (EUK) in four foot waves at Mundaka this morning. Fantasy Surfer: Beachley Classic Okay kids, Europe has come and gone and now it is time to switch gears (and genders) and log your teams in for the upcoming Beachley Classic to be held in Manly, Sydney this coming week. Reigning ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore has monopolized the event with two wins in two years of running – will the fleet-footed wunderkind go for a three-peat? Let’s see what happens. ASP WQS Situation Room – Monday, October 6, 2008 Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods? Ha! Mere pipsqueaks when paralleled to Mr. Robert Kelly Slater. As we all know, Kelly clinched ASP World Title No. 9 in Mundaka last week, surpassing the feats of virtually any other athlete in the history of sport. Congratulations to the “Greatest Sportsman of All Time”. In other news, Silvana Lima claimed the ASP WQS 4-Star Billabong Ladies Pro in Brazil, well done there, and the ASP regions are beginning to dial in their respective teams for the 2008 Billabong ASP World Junior Championships. Bede's Blog: Lowers Recap and European Insights Hey everybody, I’m in “hold” mode here with the rest of the crew in Spain waiting for the Billabong Pro Mundaka to get into the water. What’s gone on here in recent years around the harbour dredging is pretty well documented and there’re lots of views about it all. Beneath the Waves with Layne Beachley Who knows what evil lurks within the hearts of professional surfers? For that matter, who knows what good lurks within the hearts of professional surfers? As much as we think we know about the world’s best, very few ever fully open up and lay all their cards on the table. Layne Beachley (AUS), 36, former seven-time ASP Women’s World Champion and Australian icon, has accomplished more in the world of female professional surfing than anyone before her. From big-wave bravado to competitive savvy, Beachley has been the benchmark of female professional surfers for the last two decades, and now, she is sharing her story with all of us. Catching up with ASP Pro Junior Standout Travis Beckmann Travis Beckmann is one of the most consistent surfers on the ASP North America Pro Junior series. The regular-footer from Vero Beach, Florida fought through an injury plagued first half of the ASP North America Pro Junior series and is still sitting in the No. 3 position overall. With only one event remaining on the series, Beckmann is in excellent position to qualify for the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships held in Narrabeen, Australia next January.
