Oxbow World Longboard Tour - 2008/11/02 16:10
SAN CLEMENTE, California (Wednesday, October 29, 2008) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Longboard Tour (WLT) will make its final stop of the year at California’s famed San Onofre State Beach in San Clemente, California with the Oxbow World Longboard Tour event from November 5-9, 2008.
The second stop on the ASP WLT will crown the 2008 ASP World Longboard Champion and the best in the world are converging upon San Clemente to do battle.
The ASP WLT consists of the finest longboarding competitors who compete in two Oxbow World Longboard Tour events in an attempt to earn the title of ASP World Longboard Champion. The previous Oxbow Pro event is held at Les Cavalliers in Anglet, France.
Harley Ingleby (Coffs Harbour, AUS), 25, won the first Oxbow World Longboard Tour event in Anglet, France this season, and will be out to claim this year’s title over defending ASP WLT Champion Phil Rajzman (Rio de Janeiro, BRA), 26, who is currently sitting in third overall and is well within striking distance of a repeat title over current series leader, Ingleby.
The Australian will look to carry the momentum from his first event victory to California, where he hopes to accomplish his dream of becoming ASP World Longboard Champion.
“It would be an absolute dream come true,” Ingleby said. “It’s one of those things that you always thought about when you were a grommet. Looking up to the guys that had done it. I know when I was that age I never expected to ever be in this situation.”
Ingleby feels the new addition to the ASP WLT benefits the sport of longboarding and helps the progression and exposure of the more traditional side of surfing.
“It absolutely helps our sport,” Ingleby said. “Especially from the exposure we get from it being all up and running on the website along side the World Tour surfers. It’s definitely important for longboarding to have a World Champion crowned each year.”
Colin McPhillips (San Clemente, CA), 33, former three-time ASP World Champion and current No. 5 on the ASP World Longboard Tour, is the local favorite entering the event and will look to take the 2008 championships at his home break. The professional longboarding veteran has spent the majority of his life surfing at San Onofre State Beach and will be hungry to claim a victory in front of his friends and family.
“I've had a lot of meaningful wins for me through out my career but winning at home would take the cake,” McPhillips said. “San Onofre State Beach is my spot, my friends and family all hang out there, so it would be really special for me to bring home the win for the entire beach.”
Despite the fact that San Onofre State Beach is McPhillips’ home break, he feels that the new stop on the men’s ASP World Longboard Tour is an excellent addition to this year’s list of events.
“Having an event at San Onofre State Beach is great for Longboarding,” McPhillips said. “San Onofre is the Mecca of Longboard surfing in California. It is my home spot so I'm really excited to get to surf in front of all my friends and family. A win for me at my home spot would be super sweet.”
The Oxbow World Longboard Tour event will run from November 5-9, 2008 and will decide this year’s ASP World Longboard Champion.

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Wednesday, November 05, 2008) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Longboard Tour (WLT) saw top seeds Harley Ingleby (AUS), 25, Antoine Delpero (FRA), 23, and Bonga Perkins (HAW), 36, standout on the opening day of the Oxbow World Longboard Tour event in peaky two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at San Onofre State Beach today.
The Oxbow World Longboard Tour event is a new addition to the ASP WLT, allowing the globe’s finest longboarding competitors a chance to earn the title of Oxbow World Longboard Tour and ASP World Longboard champion by the event’s end.
The first event of the ASP WLT saw Harley Ingleby (AUS), 25, win the Oxbow World Longboard Tour contest at Les Cavalliers in Anglet, France and the current ratings leader picked up where he left off by jumping out to an early lead in his Round 1 heat at San Onofre State Beach today. Ingleby made the best of the inconsistent conditions caused by the high tide and posted two solid scores on the way to his heat victory.
“It was pretty tough and I think the tide is hitting the high so it was really inconsistent,” Ingleby said. “I was just lucky that I got a bigger one right off the bat so I could relax a bit and the other guys were sort of scratching to get their first waves.”
The heat victory moves Ingleby one step closer to the coveted ASP World Longboard Champion title, but the young Australian is trying to approach this event as he would any other contest.
“I’m trying not to think about it too much and just surf as if it’s any other contest and get as far as I can,” Ingleby said. “A lot of the boys have asked me if I’ve counted up the points and all that and honestly I haven’t really looked. I’m just trying to not really look at it.”
Perkins proved his surfing ability stretches far beyond the heavy waves he’s familiar with at home on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii by posting one of the day’s highest single wave scores of a near-perfect 9.10 out of a possible 10 in the small, peaky surf on offer in his opening heat.
“There are pretty soft waves out there, really peaky, and nothing was really linking up for me, but all you need is one,” Perkins said. “I’m happy to get that one and get the cobwebs out.”
Perkins started the wave off with a huge forehand blast and followed up with several powerful carves to earn the impressive score.
“I didn’t know that the judges were going to give me that high of a score,” Perkins said. “I just wanted to get that big hit on the outside. I know that the judges are looking for the outside maneuvers especially when there are not many sets coming through. Luckily I got that one big hit on the outside and followed it up with some one the inside.”
Matthew Moir (ZAF), 31, who is currently rated fifth on the ASP WLT, was also a standout in Round 1 today, earning the day’s highest heat total of 17.15 out of a possible 20 and advanced confidently into Round 3 over longtime competitor Alex Salazar (BRA) and Brad Vetter (USA). The stylish longboarder found the wave needed to claim his Round 1 win in the remaining minutes of his heat and was thrilled with the result.
“Alex (Salazar) has always been a long time competitor and I’ve never actually beaten him, so I was amping for it,” Moir said. “The waves came through and I was a little bit nervous on that first one and I got quite a good score and I tried to get a few inside ones and it went flat. All of a sudden that one came through at the end and I got a good score, so I’m stoked on that one.”
The innovative goofy-footer combined several progressive maneuvers with classic nose riding to dominate his opening heat. It was obvious that Moir felt right at home at San Onofre State Beach today, as Moir claims that the famed cobblestone reef-break reminds him of his local surf spot in South Africa.
“It’s very similar to what I ride back home,” Moir said. “I’ve been here a couple of times, so If you get the right one that actually links up it’s a good wave. You can do a lot of modern maneuvers and a lot of old school nose riding, so at least you can do a whole variety and it’s really good for longboarding.”
Current ASP WLT No. 2, Delpero, advanced directly into Round 3 of the Oxbow World Longboard Tour event as well. The young French talent made the best of a wave starved heat and is satisfied about his Round 3 berth.
“There were not enough waves in that heat,” Delpero said. “It was just peaks and no wall so it was difficult to make some turns, but it’s good, I got first so I’m into the next round.”
Delpero, who was the runner-up to Ingleby at the Oxbow World Longboard Tour event in Anglet, France, is in contention to take the 2008 ASP WLT title from the hungry Australian with a strong enough result here at San Onofre State Beach.
“It would be perfect, but we’re going to see, you never know,” Delpero said. “I hope we have some good waves and I will do my best.”

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Thursday, November 6, 2008) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Longboard Tour (WLT) kicked off the second day of the Oxbow World Longboard Tour at San Onofre State Beach in one-to-three foot (1 metre) conditions. Today’s action saw local event trialists such as Steve Newton (USA), 23, and Joe Aaron (USA), 17, eliminate some of the ASP WLT’s top performers in Round 2, while fellow San Onofre State Beach local Tom Lloy (USA), 22, compiled the highest heat total of the day.
The Oxbow World Longboard Tour at San Onofre State Beach marks the last of two events held on the ASP WLT, with the series’ top seed taking this year’s prized title of 2008 ASP World Longboard Champion.
Newton, who entered the main event by advancing through two trials heats, issued the upset of the day by defeating ASP WLT No. 5 Carlos Bahia (BRA). The San Clemente local hopes to compete on the ASP WLT next year and feels that the heat victory shows that he can contend with the world’s best.
“I live in San Clemente and this means everything to me,” Newton said. “I want to do the tour next year, if there is a tour in France, so this result means everything to me.”
Newton amassed an impressive heat total of 15.25 out of 20 to defeat the Brazilian longboarding star with a combination of smooth turns and classic noseriding.
“We were actually thinking about holding it off today,” Newton said. “All of a sudden when we were making the call some sets started rolling through and I just got really fortunate with the waves in my heat.”
The progressive longboarder knows that he has a tough road ahead, as he will continue to face the event’s top seeds due to his entrance into the event as a trialist. Newton will tackle current ratings leader Harley Ingleby in Round 3.
“I’m psyching right now,” Newton said. “I think I’m the lowest seed in the event because I got in as a trialist, so I might have to surf against Harley (Ingleby) in Round 3 and he’s a really good competitor.”
Aaron, who was also a local trialist, eliminated Australian Jackson Close (AUS) in a tight heat to advance into Round 3 and was fired up with his result. The young Dana Point native had several long noserides in his heat to claim the win.
“For me, I was stoked to even be in this contest,” Aaron said. “I actually got in through the trials. To get in from the trials and get this far is huge for me. I live about 10 minutes away and I surf here most of the time so I’m happy to be in the event.”
Aaron is one of the youngest surfers in the event and looks at this contest as an opportunity to improve his level of surfing while competing against some of the world’s finest competitive longboarders.
“It just pushes me more to be able to surf against guys that are at this level,” Aaron said. “It betters me as a surfer and I’m stoked to be in this event.”
Lloy, who is currently rated 17th amongst his fellow ASP WLT competitors, compiled the highest heat total of the day, a 16.00 out of 20, and eliminated Rusty Kealuana (HAW) from the event.
“I just kind of waited for the right ones,” Lloy said. “I knew that Rusty (Keaulana) was going to sit outside with priority, so I just wanted to pick a couple off to put the pressure on him and it worked out.”
Lloy used his local knowledge of San Onofre State Beach to dominate the heat over Keaulana and earned a Round 3 berth with the result.
“I surf here every day,” Lloy said. “I grew up in Dana Point and I’ve been surfing here my whole life. It really helps knowing when some of the peaks are going to shift over. It’s really good to have that knowledge.”
Tomorrow’s Oxbow World Longboard Tour action will see today’s heat winners tackle the winners from Round 1. Round 3 action is expected to begin tomorrow at 7:30am local time.
