Re:KA Winter Series 08 - 2008/07/06 07:43 The first round of the KASailWINTERSERIES was held today at Boggy Lake. The forecast was very light and a few braved the cold conditions (5 deg when I got there this morning) to rig their biggest sails, boards and fins and slug it out for a figure eight one hour marathon. The fleet consisted of big slalom boards, sails around 7.5m / 9.0m and also Richard Upton on his Exocet Kona, looking very threatening in the light winds. Steve Roberts was on hand with his boat again, and after surviving a high speed blow-out whilst cornering on the way there, he eventually arrived and set the course for us with our shiny new inflatable buoys courtesy of Windsurfing SA.

The wind was slightly stronger for the first half of the event (around 15 knots max) and most of us were planing around the course. Sam Doecke took an early lead and managed to lap the entire fleet and myself (I was in second at that stage) and continued planing the whole time. The wind dropped a little towards the end and some of us could no longer get planing, but Nick Bellgrove came to the fore with his 9.0m and ended up battling it out with Sam for the lead.

In the end, the results for round one are:
1st - Sam Doecke 16 laps
2nd - Nick Bellgrove 16 laps
3rd - Chris Dimond 13 laps
4th - Joe Belluzzo 12 laps
5th - Richard Upton 10 laps
6th - Tim Hemer 8 laps
7th - Geoff Shuttleworth 7 laps
= 8th - David Lane 2 laps (retired)
= 8th - Milo Milutinovic 2 laps (retired)

Well done to Sam Doecke (can't believe he got a 36 knot peak too!!)

Thanks to all for participating.

Next weekend is round two. We will hold either Slalom or GPS Speed depending on the forecast. Hope to see you all there.

Re:KA Winter Series 08 - 2008/07/10 20:37 The second round of the KASail WINTERSERIES'08 will be held on Saturday 12th
July at Boggy Lake (head to Lake Reserve Road approx 5 km's past the old
Boggy Lake gate). Registration and briefing will be at 11am and close of
sailing at 5pm. This event is scheduled to be 'slalom', and should be some
good tight slalom racing in the forecast 20-30 N/NW winds. The one-off
series entry fee is $40 and this covers event costs and boat expenses. You
will also need to be a current member of Windsurfing SA or affiliate, and a
link is provided here <http://www.windsurfing.org/files/SA_MSHIP.pdf> for

Re:KA Winter Series 08 - 2008/07/13 13:55 The second round of the KASailWINTERSERIES’08 was held yesterday at Boggy Lake. The forecast was for N/NW winds at 20-30 knots, and the plan was to run slalom racing. These plans soon changed when we tried to place the first buoy, and the wind was so strong that it took off across the water with the anchor dragging across the surface sending spray high into the air. A quick chase in the boat and Sam was able to grab it on the run. We then realised that perhaps our shiny new massive inflatable buoys were going to be too big for the day (and perhaps our boat was too small), so we would focus on some speed instead. We weren’t at the best venue for speed sailing conditions, and the strong cross wind with 1 foot chop was quite unsettling on the boards. It was also difficult to find a board/sail/fin combo that worked and the gusts were very strong but there were still lulls that would have you sinking if you were on small gear.

There was only a modest turnout, but in the end, the results were:

35.4 knots Sam Doecke

35.1 knots Tim Hemer

32.1 knots Chris Dimond

29.8 knots Richard Upton (27.9 on the Kona)

29.3 knots Norm Clarke

26.8 knots Nick Bellgrove

Crazy day, and super cold once again, but then that’s what this winter racing is all about.
The next round is on the weekend of 16/17 August, and will either be slalom or speed again depending on conditions.

Hope to see you there.
