Maui V-Max Speed Meeting this Sunday - 2008/05/24 08:42 Aloha all,

The gods of speed appear to be smiling on us. Despite light winds all week the forecast is bumping up the winds for Sunday. There is a good chance we will see racing conditions.

The minimum windspeed for an official speed meeting is 15 knots or 17mph. If the wind on Sunday is consistently less than this but sailable we will have fun races instead which will not score points for the series.

The course will be open from 12:00 to 4:00pm if conditions permit.

I will do a skippers meeting and presentation on the GT-11 GPS unit at 11:00am followed by registration.

There is no charge for participation in the Maui Vmax. However a GT-11 GPS unit is required. If you do not own one you can purchase one from us with an modified Aquapac ready to go for $199. There will also be a limited number of GPS units available for rent. $20 for 1 hour of water time or $35 for 2 hours of water time. Units may be shared.

Please e-mail Tom at tom@ocean7design to reserve GPS units for purchase. The rental units will be available on a first come first served basis.

WARNING: The tide is low in the morning and the lower reef should not be sailed.

See you sunday!

Re:Maui V-Max Speed Meeting this Sunday - 2008/05/27 18:05 Inconsistent and light winds for this years 1st Maui Vmax saw a very limited field of competitors battle the elements. The weather teased all day offering a sporadic few minutes of good conditions up, then taking them away.

Alex Aguera proved the best way to deal with such conditions was to spend as much time on the water as possible. I think Alex put in as many runs as the whole rest of the field combined! Early in the day the times were very even with 34s being posted. In the mid afternoon a spell of good wind saw the speeds jump up and Alex was there to capitalise posting the only speed in the 36s at 36.8 knots. In the Wave division Chris McNeil posted a very impressive 31.2 knot 100m time taking the wave division with a 30.0 knot average.

Unfortunately a major blunder by the race director caused Mark Nelsons best speeds not to be recorded. Sorry, Mark, I hope you come back next time! I promise not to make the same mistake.

Re:Maui V-Max Speed Meeting this Sunday - 2008/07/11 07:53 Aloha,

The good news is that we should have some decent wind tommorow (friday). The bad news is that the winds are forecast to drop over the weekend with a slight strengthening on Tuesday. The trend is definately in the wrong direction for the Speed Meeting.

Please be sure to check your e-mail Saturday night or Sunday morning for an official announcement. If the forecast winds are too light We will postpone Speed Meeting 3 to August 10th. The next meeting will be the Make-up for Speed Meeting 2 on July 27th.

The trade winds have to return eventually, and with a lot of making up to do I hope the second half of the summer makes up for the first.

Cheers,

Tom Hammerton - Race Director/Timekeeper

Re:Maui V-Max Speed Meeting this Sunday - 2008/07/15 08:19 OK, I know I am the dumbest guy on the planet. Sorry for canceling todays Speed meeting based on yesterdays forecasts. As I am sure you all know, today turned out quite windy. NWS and UH met dept said it would not be and I was stupid enough to believe it! Ironically my week out forecast turned out to be spot on and my day before forecast was complete rubbish!

As we have a bunch of visitors from out of town who are keen to compete I would like to re-schedule the speed meeting for later this week. friday looks good. If you would like to compete on friday at Sprecks please e-mail me at:
tom@ocean7design.com. I will be at the beach from 11am and the course will be open from 12 noon. I will keep the course open until at least 6pm or later if people want to sail after work.

If anyone wants to volunteer to help me log the tracks I would appreciate it as my normal crew will not be there to help on friday and I would love to get a few runs in myself.

Please pass the word to other sailors who may not be on this mailing list (such as Peter John who I know is not on the list).

Sorry for being such an idiot - the beers are on me friday!

Re:Maui V-Max Speed Meeting this Sunday - 2008/07/29 22:12 Sunday's Maui Vmax Speed Meeting was finally blessed with decent winds. The wind was moderate reaching 25mph with gusts to 28mph, and slightly onshore out of the north-east. Although the field of competitors was small the competition was fierce and there was tight racing all day. In the end Peter John edged Alex Augera into second place with a better average speed of 35.9 knots over Alex's 35.7. Alex held onto the best speed of the day with a 36.5 knot run. Matt Daniels sailed consistently edging past Tom Hammerton into 3rd place. In a last ditch effort Tom rigged a 6.6 with 15 minutes left to go in the competition convinced he could find the 0.4 knots he needed to pass Matt. Tom improved his average posting a 33.9 knot run, but it was not enough and he settled for fourth. Chris Adamson posted a nice 34.3 knot run on the way to fith and also claimed top Austrailian bragging rights passing Chris Lockwood on the Speed Ladder for the 7th place ranking. Two ladies joined the fray for the first time this year. Nice to see them out there giving it a go. Well done Kristen and Erin, we hope to see you at the next meeting August 30th.
