2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - 2008/08/12 19:08 The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - Day One
11.08.08 -
One of the biggest slalom fleets in almost a decade hits the water for the start of the six day long Alaçati epic.

The biggest players in the PWA’s prestigious Slalom discipline have touched down in Alaçati, Turkey, joining forces with an impressive local racing contingent. The combined total of the men’s and women’s fleets comes in just short of 100 competitors, making this the biggest racing fleet in eight years.

The first morning of the event was set aside for rigging and registration, giving the local thermal wind plenty of time to build before racing commenced in the afternoon.

When registration was completed, 75 men and 18 women signed up for the event, and the trademark Alaçati wind had built to a solid 20-25 knots, accompanied by super smooth water. In nothing short of perfect slalom conditions, the event was ready to be christened with the first men’s and women’s races.

Starting with the men’s fleet, the first round of heats passed without upset, the only exception being Dan Ellis (Fanatic, MauiSails), who let nerves get the better of him when he false started. The implications mean Ellis clocks up a 75th position finish and will no doubt have to use one of his discards on the result should four races be completed (four races grants the first discard).

Flying the Turkish flag, Enes Yýlmazer (JP, NeilPryde) carried the hopes of the local fans on his shoulders. A promising start saw him fly into fourth in his first heat, but a lapse of concentration in the subsequent round meant he missed out on a place in the semi finals by one position.

Moving through to the semi finals and Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) showed a welcome return to form. The iconic speed sailor looked dominant in a heat laden with slaloms heaviest hitters, and ultimately stormed to victory ahead of second and third place rivals Jimmy Diaz (Starboard, North) and Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North).

In the lower half of the draw, there wasn’t a great deal of surprise when Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) emerged victorious in his semi final. Sailing fast in second place, Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer) looked hungry to continue his run of form after finishing 4th place overall in the last event in Fuerteventura.

Moving into the final and predictability struck again when Albeau barged his way to the front of the fleet. Starting as he no doubt intends to go on, he claimed the first race and early event lead as his. Always consistent, Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, MFC, Dakine) settled into his familiar second position, and Maynard looked like he was warming up for bigger and better things in third.

Toping the ranks in the losers final was Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Exocet, NeilPryde, MFC), who had his work cut out to defeat Peter Bijl (Fanatic, NeilPryde), who’s more determined than ever after missing out on the start of the season due to issues with the US immigration process!

In the women’s fleet the seething Turkish crowd showed their support for compatriots and PWA regulars Çagla Kubat (Starboard, North) and Lena Erdil (The Loft). In response, the pair made their way into the final and proceeded to take 8th and 7th respectively.

Familiarly it was Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) and Karin Jaggi (F2, North) that had the firmest grip on the finale, fuelled by an age-old rivalry that’s pushed them to another level of racing. In this instance it was Ghibaudo that took top honors, leaving Jaggi simmering in second and Verena Fauster (F2, Gaastra) in third. Polish racer Marta Hlavaty (MauiSails) put her mark on the losers final when she crossed the finish line in first.

Picking up the action again tomorrow, proceedings will kick off at 11.00am with the skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am onwards. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from day two of competition.

The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Day Two

Shaking things up on day two, the tables are turned following an afternoon of shocks and surprises.

Starting the day with the second race in the men’s fleet, the 74 man first round was quickly pruned down to two ten man semi finals without major upset.

Showing his thirst for victory, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North) made light work of the 4 buoy down wind course to sail to victory in his semi final, with rival Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) mimicking his performance in the second semi final. The pair both advanced to the final where they’d go head to head.

Final time, and Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, MFC, Dakine) made his presence known as he pressured Dunkerbeck for the number one spot. Behind them and off the pace of the leaders, Albeau jostled with Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) for third position.

The final reach said it all, as Dunkerbeck opened up an impressive lead to cruise to victory completely untouched by his nearest challenger, Pritchard, who took second place. The Albeau vs. Williams battle ended with William’s succumbing to the World Champion’s brute strength in fourth, leaving Albeau free to take third position.

In the losers final, Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde) put his foot down to sail to victory ahead of Arnon Dagan (Fanatic, Gaastra) in second and Cedric Bordes (Tabou, Gaastra) in third.

Moving directly into race three, proceedings seemed to sway in favor of the unexpected. The first shock came when Peter Bijl (Fanatic, NeilPryde) blew his chances in the first round with a false start.

Moving into the quarterfinals, and Chris Pressler (Starboard, Severne) fell to the same fate when he crossed the start line early. This however, was only a small taste of things to come.

Rolling onto the first semi final, the crowd were dumbstruck when they heard that seven of the ten man heat had false started. Amongst the perpetrators were Albeau, Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde), Peter Volwater (F2, North) and Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer). The mass disqualification left Pritchard, Matt Wemms (Fanatic, North) and Jesper Orth (Starboard, Severne) free to advance without even having to sail the heat.

The second semi final was marginally more predictable despite Dan Ellis’ (Fanatic, MauiSails) disqualification thanks to the seemingly contagious spat of false starts.

In the rerun minus Ellis, Dunkerbeck stole the heat from Bora Kozanoglu (Starboard), but his victory was by no means handed to him on a plate, as the defiant Turk battled right to the finish line to claim a well earned second place.

In the race final, local Kozanoglu seemed hell-bent on avenging his previous clash with Dunkerbeck. Sniffing his first ever race win, and backed by the ecstatic local crowd, the Turkish racer summoned an almighty performance to fend off Dunkerbeck and defy all the doubters. Rapturous applause congratulated the local hero as he claimed the race as his, leaving Dunkerbeck to settle for second, Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Exocet, NeilPryde) in third and Pritchard fourth.

The twelve strong losers final was won by Albeau, who’d done the best he could to make amends for his semi final shocker.

Moving over to the women’s fleet for race two, and Verena Fauster (F2, Gaastra) and Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) made their intentions clear, winning their respective semi finals.

Advancing into the final, Karin Jaggi seemed the most determined to take the race win. After a spirited performance she sat untouched at the front of the fleet, leaving Marta Hlavaty (MauiSails) and Lee Korzitz (Tabou, Gaastra) to fight it out for second. On the finish line, Jaggi won by a clear margin, and Hlavaty sneaked ahead of Korzitz to take second.

In the women’s losers final, Lena Erdil (Loft) bounced back after narrowly missing out on a spot in the final. A stellar performance awarded her with the win ahead of Annika Gillgren (Severne).

Race three saw Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, Loft) return to dominance after victory in her semi final. In the ensuing final she laid waste to Jaggi’s advances to add another victory to her name. Jaggi had to make do with second place and Armenia’s Sarah Hébert (Starboard, Naish) mopped up the remaining podium place in third.

A depleted losers final thanks to three false starts saw Gillgren take the victory and therefore place eleventh in that race.

The day also made inroads to the fourth men’s and women’s race, which will be completed tomorrow, on competition’s third day. Proceedings will kick off at 11.00am with the skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am onwards. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from day three of competition.

Re:2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - 2008/08/18 10:39 The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Day Three
13.08.08 -
Kevin Pritchard hands the event lead to Bjorn Dunkerbeck after a shock exit in the quarter finals of race five. Meanwhile, Valerie Ghibaudo continues to cement her position at the top of the women’s rankings after a day of perfect first place finishes.

The third day of competition started out with the completion of race four, which had been whittled down to the finals on the previous day. First to hit the race course was the men’s losers final, which got off to a nervous start after Jimmy Diaz (Starboard, North), local Bora Kozanoglu (Starboard) and Patrick Diethelm (F2, North) all went over early.

Taking the reins of the under strength heat, Gabriel Browne (Mistral, MauiSails) led from the green flag to take a decisive victory ahead of Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Exocet, NeilPryde) in second.

Moving onto to the final, and disaster struck for Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) on the first reach “I went too downwind towards Finian at the gybe, and my clew hit his mast causing me to fall in”. The mistake left Albeau languishing at the back of the pack, and despite an effort to climb back up the ranks, he crossed the finish line in tenth position.

At the front of the pack, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North) dialed into the conditions, opening up a massive lead before finishing the race a solid half reach ahead of his nearest rival, Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) in second. Filling out the remaining podium position was Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, Dakine, MFC), who managed to hold off a sustained attack from Finian Maynard, who had to settle for fourth.

In the women’s losers final of race four, Lee Korzitz (Tabou, Gaastra) struggled to match her form from previous events, despite finding herself at the front of the fleet. She stood her ground to take the win, and eleventh overall for the race, with Australian Annika Gillgren (Severne) crossing the finish line behind her in second, and twelfth for the race.

In the winners final, Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) had her foot firmly on the throttle as she negotiated the four buoy downwind course. On the finish line she was rewarded with the victory almost an entire reach ahead of the chasing pack. Padding out the all-French podium was Alice Arutkin (Starboard, North) in second, and fifteen year old Morane Demont (Starboard, Severne) in third.

After a fifteen minute break, the men’s fleet hit the race course for the start of the fifth, and most surprising race of the event so far. The first shock came early on, when event leader Pritchard failed to advance from his quarterfinal. The implications of the blunder means Pritchard drops from the event lead, and the result may well come back to haunt him as the event progresses.

Not helping his cause, Diaz also stuttered in his quarter final, finishing in seventh position. Resultantly he made a premature exit from the elimination.

Moving onto the semi finals, and the next upset came when top ranked racer Williams finished in a disappointing eighth position, leaving him to make up for the mistake in the losers final. In the second semifinal, Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) narrowly missed out on a place in the final after being edged out of contention by Dennis Littel (F2, MauiSails), who claimed the last remaining qualifying position.

Saving the biggest upset until last, the winners final witnessed a spectacular error when seven of the ten finalists were disqualified following a mass false start. Included in the mix up were Pieter Bijl (Fanatic, NeilPryde), Peter Volwater (F2, North) and Gonzalo Costa Hoevel.

The ensuing rerun of the race gave spectators the rare site of a three man heat, comprising of Dunkerbeck, Albeau and Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer). The bout started out fairly evenly, but after the second mark it was Dunkerbeck and Albeau who’d taken the reigns of the heat. A final blast to the finish saw Albeau hold on to his lead, leaving Dunkerbeck close behind in second, and Van Der Steen chasing their wakes in third.

In the losers final, Williams extended his run of poor form when he false started, as did Julien Quentel (Starboard, NeilPryde). The pair were disqualified, leaving Arnon Dagan (Fanatic, Gaastra) to take charge of the rerun and claim eleventh place for the race.

The women’s fifth race followed a more predictable path, with all the big names advancing from the semi finals without upset. Taking their seats in the race final, Ghibaudo showed she was keen to replicate her performance from the previous race.

One reach was all she needed before there was a gap between her and the chasing pack. Familiarly, it was Karin Jaggi (F2, North) who fronted the assault on Ghibaudo, but the domineering French racer showed her mettle, extending her lead all the way to the finish line. Jaggi had to settle for second while Poland’s Marta Hlavaty (MauiSails) managed to clinch third.

In the women’s losers final, Gillgren battled her way to the front of the fleet to take victory ahead of Korzitz in second.

The day also made inroads to the sixth men’s and Women’s race. The situation in the men’s fleet has grown evermore interesting after Dunkerbeck, Pritchard and Williams failed to qualify for the final, leaving the door open for Albeau to reclaim his position at the top of the event standings.

Tune in tomorrow to see how the remainder of race six pans out. Proceedings will kick off from 11.00am with the skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am onwards. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from day four of competition.

Re:2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - 2008/08/18 10:53 The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Day Four
14.08.08 -
Antoine Albeau wins two out of the day’s three races as he mounts his attack on event leader, Bjorn Dunkerbeck. In the women’s fleet, Valerie Ghibaudo extends her event lead with two more race wins, taking her tally to six wins out of eight races.

Starting the day with victory in race six, Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) sent event leader, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North) a clear message of his intentions for the remainder of the event. Dunkerbeck could only reply with second position in the losers final after failing to qualify for the final the previous day.

Grabbing the remaining podium positions in the race six final were Arnon Dagan (Fanatic, Gaastra) in second, and Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde) in third. Swift commented, ‘That was one of the best races of my life, I kept it together and managed to hold off Finian to take third. I'm really happy with that result!’

In the women’s race six final, Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) made an uncharacteristic error when she fell gybing, leaving the door wide open for Karin Jaggi (F2, North) to take the victory, accompanied by Verena Fauster (F2, Gaastra) in second and Marta Hlavaty (MauiSails) in third. Ghibaudo had to make do with last, but luckily she can discard the result thanks to an impressively consistent string of top notch results.

Moving on to race seven, Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer) didn’t help his cause with a premature start in his quarterfinal heat. He was joined by fellow false starters Julien Quentel (Starboard, NeilPryde) and Alberto Menegatti (Starboard).

In the semi finals, local Bora Kozanoglu (Starboard) gave the crowd something to cheer about when he beat Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, MFC, Dakine) to the finish line to take victory. The pair took their places in the race final alongside the likes of Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) and Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde) who came first and second respectively in the second semi final.

The race final saw Dunkerbeck reply to Albeau’s previous race win with a victory of his own, far ahead of Albeau and Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) who were battling it out for second. Solid racing from Williams saw him hold off the reigning World Champion to be rewarded with second place, leaving Albeau to take third.

The men’s losers final was won by Josh Angulo (MauiSails, Dakine), who had to hold off advances from Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Exocet, NeilPryde) and Cyril Moussilmani (Fanatic, North) to secure the win.

In the women’s race seven clash, Ghibaudo showed that her mishap in race six was only a flash in the pan when she sailed to a convincing victory ahead of her long time rival Jaggi. Chasing the pair down was local Lena Erdil (The Loft), who sailed her best heat yet to post an impressive third place finish.

In the women’s losers final, Annika Gillgren (Severne) settled into her usual position at the front of the fleet to take eleventh place overall for race seven.

The final race of the day got underway in a gusty 12-18 knot wind. With the sailors tired from the two previous races, and conditions getting evermore testing, race eight was going to be a true test of the sailors tactical knowledge and competition stamina.

Rising to the challenge, local speedster Bora Kozanoglu (Starboard) dialed into the fluky wind to win his first two heats, and then advance from his semi final to bag a spot in the final. Also showing form, Jimmy Diaz (Starboard, North) and Angulo dominated their semi finals to advance into the final.

When crunch time came, Albeau, Dunkerbeck and Williams shot down the first reach. Progressing around mark three, Albeau sank his teeth in, giving him clean air at the front of the pack. Needing no prompting, he motored to his second win of the day, further closing the gap between him and event leader Dunkerbeck. Not far behind, Dunkerbeck capped off another successful day in second, and Williams ended his best day yet in third.

The women’s final race followed a predictable path thanks to Ghibaudo’s outstanding consistency. She claimed her sixth race win, with Jaggi looking hungry, but unable to overtake in second. Sixteen-year-old Alice Arutkin (Starboard, North) claimed the final podium position, adding to her solid run of results.

As it stands, Dunkerbeck clings on to the event lead just 0.7 points ahead of Albeau, and Williams sits in third, 10.2 points behind Albeau.

In the women’s fleet, Ghibaudo stands five points clear of her nearest rival, Jaggi, with Fauster sitting seven points behind Jaggi in third.

Quote of the day

“If you don’t qualify from your heats, you won’t make the final.” (Britain’s Dan Ellis at his philosophical best).

Tomorrow’s proceedings will kick off from 11.00am with the sailors’ skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am for the start of race nine. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from day five of competition.

Re:2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - 2008/08/18 10:54 The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Day Five
15.08.08 -
The fifth day of competition sees Antoine Albeau claw 0.3 of a point back from Bjorn Dunkerbeck’s grip on the event lead. In the women’s fleet, Valerie Ghibaudo further reinforces her event lead with another race win on the penultimate day of competition.

As the ninth race of competition got underway on the event’s penultimate day, it looked like there might be early upset in the ranks when event leader Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North) collided with Marco Begalli (Starboard) in their heat 10 quarter final clash.

Languishing at the back of the fleet, Dunkerbeck had the tall order of reclaiming an entire reach, and overtaking three people to make it into the semi final. Hell bent on qualification and seemingly unstoppable, the multiple World Champion switched into ‘Terminator mode’ and summoned a miraculous comeback to claim fifth place in the heat, enough to qualify and give him a huge psychological boost.

In the first of the race 9 semi finals, Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, Dakine, MFC) did little to help his team mate Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra), when he gybed into him, causing the Brit to crash and subsequently miss out on a spot in the race final.

During the intense final heat of the race, Dunkerbeck looked out of the equation when he approached the first mark in ninth position. To his credit, his main rival Albeau fell as he rounded the outside mark, leaving Dunkerbeck free to pass and take sixth position in the race. Albeau was left to contemplate his error in ninth.

Taking the reigns, Cyril Moussilmani (Fanatic, North) seized the opportunity to post his first race win of the event, with Ben Van Der Steen (Exocet, Simmer) claiming second and Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) claimed his equal best result in third.

In the women’s ninth race, premature starts killed the hopes of Çagla Kubat (Starboard, North) and Morane Demont (Starboard, Severne), leaving Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) free to take her familiar spot at the front of the fleet, and bag her seventh race win. Unsurprisingly, Karin Jaggi (F2, North) occupied the number two spot, a testament to her outstanding consistency while Verena Fauster (F2, Gaastra) was next over the line, reinforcing her overall third position.

In the tenth race, heat two in the men’s elimination didn’t even have to hit the race course, after four of the nine competitors premature started. Falling to a similar fate, Van Der Steen killed his hopes of climbing up the elimination when he went over early in the following round.

The semi finals saw the fall of Pieter Bijl (Fanatic, NeilPryde), when he failed to make the top five in his heat, resulting in him having to fight for positions 11 to 20 in the losers final.

Rolling onto the race final, Albeau returned to the dominant form he’s been enjoying for the best part of the 2008 season. A first place finish bolstered his attack on the event leader, Dunkerbeck, who crossed the finish line in fourth. Continuing his day of form, Moussilmani finished up in second, ahead of Peter Volwater (F2, North) in third.

In the tenth women’s race, Ghibaudo posted a conservative fourth place finish, while rival Jaggi took the opportunity to claim the race win, her third of the event so far. Keeping the Turkish flag flying high, local Lena Erdil (The Loft) crossed the line in second to claim her best result of the event so far, with fellow compatriot, Kubat taking third.

With the final day of competition looming, it’s going to come down to the wire as Dunkerbeck and Albeau battle it out for the event lead on the decisive final day of competition. In the women’s fleet, Ghibaudo has done enough to take the event title as hers, likewise Jaggi in second, leaving the battle for third place open for the chasing pack.

Tomorrow’s proceedings will kick off from 11.00am with the sailors’ skippers meeting, and the racers will be hitting the water from 11.30am for the start of the much anticipated eleventh race. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from the final of competition.

Re:2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup - 2008/08/18 11:06 The 2008 Pegasus Airlines Alaçati PWA World Cup – Final Day
16.08.08 -
The Terminator returns on judgement day: Bjorn Dunkerbeck sails to victory in race eleven, crowning him the event winner on the final day of competition in Alacati. In the women’s fleet, Valerie Ghibaudo wrapped up the event with a second in race eleven, having already done enough to take the event title.

With tensions mounting on the final day of competition, the ensuing last race of the event would prove to be make or break for Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North) and Antoine Albeau (Starboard, NeilPryde), who sat just 0.4 of a point apart at the top of the score sheet. For Albeau to rob Dunkerbeck of the event lead, he’d have to place in the top six, and beat Dunkerbeck in the final race. Likewise, for Dunkerbeck to take the event title, he’d have to place higher than Albeau.

In a warm up for the race final, Albeau and Dunkerbeck were pitched against each other in the semi finals. The resulting brawl saw Albeau gain a psychological boost when he crossed the line in second, two places above Dunkerbeck, however it was Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) that commanded the heat.

Coming down to the wire, the event title now hinged on the critical race final, with the winner quite literally taking all. As the green flag went up, Dunkerbeck seized the early advantage with a perfectly timed start. Off the pace, Albeau ran into problems when he caught a bag around his fin. The resulting drag left him towards the back of the pack, and stuck in dirty wind.

In contrast, Dunkerbeck, who seemed to be thriving under the pressure, screamed ahead of his nearest rival, Peter Volwater (F2, North) in second. By the fourth mark, Dunkerbeck was half a reach ahead, meaning the final straight was a mere formality en route to claiming the event title.

Crossing the finish line, the multiple world champion was greeted with wave upon wave of cheers and applause, as ecstatic fans congratulated the newly crowned event winner.

Albeau had little control over his result, and eventually crossed the finish line in tenth place. The crowd were then treated to a rare spectacle, as two of windsurfing’s most iconic figures congratulated each other on their latest achievements; Dunkerbeck the event winner, and Albeau, whose second overall for the event was enough to crown him the 2008 Slalom World Champion.

The final women’s race of the event would have little baring on the top positions, with Valerie Ghibaudo (Tabou, The Loft) and Karin Jaggi (F2, North) already cemented in positions one and two, regardless of the outcome.

Even so, there was pride at stake, and the consummate professionals launched into one last awesome battle for all to enjoy. This time round it would be Jaggi’s day, as she cruised to victory with Ghibaudo close behind in second. Much like the men’s result, Ghibaudo was crowned event winner, but Jaggi’s second overall for the event was enough to crown her the 2008 Women’s Slalom World Champion.
Our congratulations go out to the winners, and all those lucky enough to take part in this amazing event.
