Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report March 2010 - 2010/03/05 12:52 Forster/Tuncurry Fishing Report
5 March 2010
Estuary: My regular spies this week have reported that nice sized Tarwhine have been getting landed off the Harbour Breakwall on the Forster side. A few nice fish have been sighted around the 23cm mark all caught on live nippers pumped around in Ohmas Bay. Again this week the report of Mulloway is still strong with reports of 5 fish being caught this week. Again as mentioned in previous reports Live Bait is the winner here with either Pike or Yellowtail the pick. Pike are being caught on small minnow style gold lures and the Yellowtail is happy to chase size 8 or 10 standard Bait jigs. Not only are these good bait but the kids have been having a ball catching them after school each afternoon on jigs. A few Bonito have been caught along the breakwall as far up as the Co op wharf !
Still a few good medium to large Flatties being landed, however this week has seen the return of some nice whiting again being caught on poppers. The trick here is to fast retrieve these surface lures and let the Whiting chase and attack. Although at times stopping the popper for a short 10 seconds will make those curious fish attack as well – you may well be surprised at the result.
Bream this week are still on the bite on either baits or small hard bodied lures. Fish anywhere around the leases in the slack water.
Rock: Not much to report except for a few reports of Tailor around Latitude Rocks.
Offshore: Still plenty of Bonito around it seems where ever anyone wants to fish at the moment - even in the Cape Hawke Harbour. Very pleasing reports from one angler who “bagged out” last Saturday on Flathead out at The Barge in about 20 m of water. Mahi Mahi have been landed at the FAD. Local boys fishing the interclub at Nelson Bay were successful with a few hook ups and tags last weekend as well on Marlin ( sorry no size to report).
Beach: Again all beaches in the area have produced nice tailor caught on the standard 3 hook gang with Pilchards as bait. One customer was kind enough to smoke some tailor for us during the week and delivered it for us to try. Very nice smoked with “Apple”wood chips.

Re:Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report March 2010 - 2010/03/11 22:18 Forster/Tuncurry Fishing Report
12 March 2010
Estuary: This week I have received outstanding reports from many locals who have “bagged out” in the Lake on both bream and flathead. The best report was from regular angler Neville Harris who fished both the Wallamba and Coolongolook Rivers during the week and landed good catches of nice flathead all around the 55cm – 60cm mark with the best fish measuring 1.1m – she was released back to continue to breed for the future. A group of regular Sydney siders spent last weekend fishing the lake on the last of the run out tides and also caught their limit of Flatties each day drifting with whitebait.
The Bream seem to have started to swap places with the Flathead and have moved down the river into the lake system. Normally you would expect this to happen later in the month or in April but anglers are happy to make the most of the fish while they last. Fishing the pillions around the bridge plus in amongst the oyster leases has certainly proved to be the best spots this week. We received a nice shop photo during the week of 8 stunning bream all around 800gr all caught on the last of the run out tide.
The boys from Smiths Lake FC have reported some good catches from within Smiths Lake of mainly Flathead and a few very good whiting.
Mud Crabs have been plentiful in the Wallamba River and up in Beaky Bay.
Rock: I visited Janie’s Corner on Sunday for a snoop around to see what was biting and can report that a few Bream and Drummer were in anglers’ bags. The water was choppy, white and rough and this was producing the best fish.
Offshore: Reports of good tag and release of both Striped and Black Marlin down off Nelson Bay along with a sprinkling of a few Mako Sharks. One boat spent over two hours fighting one Mako!
Bar Cod up to 12kg have been landed off Old Bar in about 80 metres of water along with good snapper and Pearl Perch adding to the days outing.
Beach: No formal reports from the beach this week, however with many customers leaving the store with Mustad 4202 3/0 hooks and bags of Pilchards I suspect that Tailor are still running.

Re:Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report March 2010 - 2010/03/18 21:26 Forster/Tuncurry Fishing Report
19 March 2010
Estuary: Fish fish everywhere! This is the comments I am hearing everyday through the shop doors as locals and tourists alike are going home each day with a mixed bag ready for the dinner plate.
Land based anglers fishing at the end of Point Road are being rewarded with nice flathead up around the mid 40’s mark plus good quality bream. The pick of the baits here has been Hawkesbury Prawns.
Little Street Baths is producing nice bream at night fishing with little or no sinker and floating baits out into the channel.
Those heading into the Lake should try the drift around the back of Mosquito Island for Flathead on whitebait or concentrate around the floating oyster racks with small hard body lures for bream. Blackfish have arrived in mass with good reports of fish up to 2lb caught off the breakwall near the black moored boat on the flood tide. Plenty of nice mullet running the breakwall every day.
Plenty of Mud Crabs still in the lake system.
Rock: Only one report this week of spotted Mackeral being caught at Charlottes Head. This species is common to be around in Autumn and those that wish to chase them should either try spinning for them or drifting a bait of either strip mullet or Pilchards. An absolute outstanding table fish so good luck to those that land one. Bonito still plentiful.
Offshore: No reports.
Beach: Plenty of reports from the beaches that the tailor is running and from all reports most are good size. Common this week for most to get their bag limit within an hour with the flood tide the best bet.

Re:Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report March 2010 - 2010/03/26 07:54 Forster/Tuncurry Fishing Report
25 March 2010
Estuary: Blackfish have been rewarding all those that chase them with good fish and bag limits most days. Those that are able to obtain good quality green cabbage have fished the best. The main breakwall early morning has fished the best.Forster side of the breakwall this week has produced some nice bream. Mullet Fillet strips or Hawkesbury Prawns is the pick of the baits.
The Lake and Wallamba River is still producing nice Flathead on the last hour of the run out tide. Tony Jackson and son in law up from The Entrance “bagged” out on Monday morning on Flatties all around the mid 40cm mark using Atomic 3” prong ripperz.
Again the end of Point Road is fishing well to those that are land bounded. Remember to take your can of “Bushman” to keep the sandflies at bay!!!
Rock: I have received some second hand reports of Spotted Mackeral being landed off Bennetts Head. Either drift baits or Chrome slice style lures like 40gram Raider Lures and Halco Twistys are the pick .
Offshore: With the good warm currents around the Ruse Fishing Club have spent the week on their annual holiday and have been kind enough to provide us with good reports throughout the week. Seal Rocks to Blackhead has produced good large Flathead of about 60cm. Strip baits or squid have been the bait. Out wide (location not disclosed) in about 50m of water has landed the boys good bags of Mowong and good table size Snapper. The warm water temp has kept the water alive with some good Kings. Bonito are everywhere for those that want an easy catch of fresh bait.
Beach: Nine Mile beach at the back of the caravan park is fishing well with nearly all anglers coming away with 10 plus Tailor in a short hour or so fishing using Pilchards on a gang hook rig. The beach has also provided a smattering of Bream as a good by catch if you can get through the Tailor. Pick your tides with the top of the floodtide the best.
To those that are visiting Forster/Tuncurry over Easter we will be open every day from 8.00am till 5.30pm for all your requirements and info on top spots.
