Re:Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report - July 2010 - 2010/07/23 16:03 Forster/Tuncurry Fishing Report
23 July 2010
Estuary: This week has been full of howling cold southerly winds with most anglers preferring to stay indoors and tinker with their gear in the warm confines of the shed. Those that have ventured out have reported that there is some great bream fishing to be had but you have had to work hard in the current conditions continue. Customers have commented upon the number of bream and blackfish they have seen schooling together. Blackfish are still an easy target with masses of fish either along the breakwall, down off little street opposite the hotel or off the back of Tern Island. Quality weed is still hard to come by so bring some with you.
Robbie Thorington fished the river last weekend up high in his canoe and came back with many photos of very nice healthy bream. He landed eight bream all up around the 1kg mark plus many large “Flatties”. All fish were caught on hard body lures with his best results on Maria Chubbys and TT Switchblades.
Rock: Pig fishing remains excellent and from all reports from our Rockhoppers they say it could be considered the best in years. Most rock platforms are holding fish. James Osbourne fished the rocks around Cape Hawke last weekend and was rewarded with some very nice bream. He passed the word onto me that his best results was Striped Tuna as the “gun” bait.
Local spearfisho’s tell me that they have never seen so many drummer, bream, and blackfish off the rocks anywhere around Forster. After the seas settle over the next few days fishing on the rocks should be at their best with plenty of food washing around within the water.
Offshore: As mentioned above, a week of cold, howling southerly wind has really dampened offshore fishing – even the commercial boats have stayed in port. However, if you must go outside, prepare for the leatherjackets, and loss of gear through bite-offs. The jackets are thick and even though everyone that is fishing for them is getting a bag limit quite easily be prepared to make a few rigs up.
Beach: Last weekend was the best for tailor from the beach. One customer landed a nice a “greenback” Tailor down off Seven Mile which weighed in at 6.35kg – the biggest I have seen for some time. Adding to the catch was another 9 fish all up around the 2-3kg mark. All fish caught on chrome spinners. Salmon are still everywhere. 8 yr old Paris Flanagan fished with her Dad last weekend on Seven Mile and was landing Tailor quicker than her Dad could bait up his own rod with Pilchards. A wonderful story and great to see the kids out and about fishing.
