Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report, November 2009 - 2009/11/15 08:52 Offshore conditions are much improved although run-off from the recent rain has dirtied the waters in close. After dark the Trag are again on the chew. Most reefs are providing a good feed of Snapper with a lot of these fish being pan size. There is a fish trap buoy at Five Mile Reef which is holding Kingfish and you would expect this to also be the case at the fisheries FAD. Live bait will get the best results. Obviously bottom fishing around trap buoys is also worth trying. The sea surface temperature chart shows excellent water out wide and may contain some early season Mahi Mahi or marlin.

Plenty of people are having a go on the beaches the last few afternoons with a few Tailor and Bream the result. Fishing the early morning high tide this coming weekend should be productive.

Young Dan nailed a nice Mulloway on a 9" soft plastic Thursday afternoon whilst fishing the breakwall. It took him two casts before hooking up.
The lake and channel remain very dirty on the run out tide, but the fish activity is excellent. The sand flats just up from the bridge are being fished every morning by a fleet of tinnies all chasing Trumpeter Whiting. Further up, the Breckinridge Channel is proving the place to be for some quality Bream and Flathead. Prawns are running after dark and are in part responsible for the improved fishing. Sand Whiting are being sighted in numbers but are yet to aggressively chase a popper. I wouldn't go too far up the rivers as the salinity levels would be low from the rain. Setting a trap for Mud Crabs can be productive in the lower parts of the rivers as the crabs often come down with the 'fresh'.

Re:Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report, November 2009 - 2009/11/23 06:45 The warm blue water is about 15kms offshore, just wide of the FAD. This water is holding big schools of bait but as yet few predators. The small Kingfish I mentioned last week are still around as are the Trag after dark. Seal Rocks is still the place to go for quality Snapper.

The beach fishing has been slow as has the rocks.

Estuary fishing has really improved with multiple captures of large Mulloway coming from the breakwalls. In almost all cases these fish have been taken on soft plastics.

Sand Whiting are becoming very aggressive towards all manner of poppers. Flathead are now very active taking most baits and lures.

The Bass fishing in the area has really improved since the recent heavy rains.

Re:Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report, November 2009 - 2009/11/28 08:12 I'd like to say that the offshore fishing situation had improved, but that could be stretching the truth. Cooler, dirty water is holding off our section of the coast and extends well out to sea beyond the FAD. Divers tell me that the bottom temperatures are even worse. Having said that, there have been some fish caught including a few Trag after dark, some Snapper etc. The only baitfish around are Yellowtail, the usual schools of slimys have disappeared.

I've had a couple of reports of small Snapper being taken off rocks at the base of Cape Hawke and at Seal Rocks. A steady burley trail seems to be bringing the best results. I'd like to think that with the good tides this weekend, and with a Full Moon next week, that the beach fishing would improve. The only reports of note are of a few small Mulloway off Diamond Beach.

The estuary is being effected in the lower sections by the cool ocean water. Further up the lake where the water is warmer is where the best of the fishng and crabbing is being done. Most of the summer species are settling into their usual routine and can be targeted with baits or lures.
