Re:Port Stephens Fishing Report December 2009 - 2009/12/20 00:50 18 December 2009

OUTSIDE
Reports of a few Stripes around the shelf last weekend and a few big Dollies coming from Almark Mountain. Reds to 5kg are being caught in fairly good numbers from Boulder Bay down to Fisherman’s. Heaps of Flatties on the drift wide of Broughton and Little islands. Kingfish still getting around Broughton in close around the Sisters, Cod and Inner Rock. Squid are thick as thieves in all the protected bays such as Hospital Bay, Lighthouse Bay and the Gantry.

BEACH.
The water on the beach is beautiful 20 plus degrees and full of fish. Big whiting and Bream are coming off Fingal and Box beach, as well as Stockton. Jewfish have showed up along Stockton with one customer bagging six schoolies to 5kg as well as a heap of Whiting all on live tube worms. Some quality Tailor are over at Fingal spit on the ocean side using whole pilchards and garfish. Still a few Salmon swimming around but no where near the numbers they have been in.

ROCKS
There are a few small kings getting around Boat Harbour as well as the odd Drummer and Bream. Tailor have come on over the past week with good catches coming from Tomaree Head, Boulder Bay and Rocky Point. Fingal spit is now crossable which opens up some great rock fishing for those prepared to do the walk over. It is only crossable at low tide so expect to spend either a couple of hours or a whole day there. The Grit Hole on the northern side of Fingal Island is one of the best bream spots around. There’s also heaps of options for those chasing Tailor, Kingfish and Reds from the rocks.

ESTUARY
The warm water has fired up the Whiting with plenty getting nailed on poppers over the past week. Brent “Deckie” Hancock did some experimenting with a new Nories Popper called a Treju with some impressive results. He out caught his mate who was using the popular Rebel Pop R to the tune of 10 fish to 1. For those traditionalists, Live Worms are still doing the trick over the flats on high tide around the short cut at Corrie Island. Flathead are around on just about every beach between Shoal Bay and Tailors beach, just fish those high tides with plastics or gulps. The Breakwall is still holding loads of Bream and plenty of Kingies. The Kingies are willing to take metals, soft plastics and livie’s its just a matter of stopping them before they stop you. Squid are still about in the moorings around Shoal Bay as well as Jimmy’s Beach . Jewies still poking around Middle Island and the Wreck.
