Fishing report Coffs Harbour - 2008/06/26 08:09 Think of the fuel you’re saving, that’s about all I can say in sympathy for the boating fisher folk. There seems to be a pattern though of early mid-week high pressure systems giving us at least one or two good mornings a week. To get up to date on the latest weather log on to www.askhuey.com.au and join the fishing forum, where you’ll find this column posted every week. Those taking advantage early in the morning are pulling snapper and Kingfish with the odd Cobia and Mulloway. Most stayed in close at the regular haunts around the lighthouse, Bundagen and off Mcauleys is fishing well. Leather jacket have shown up in numbers at around 60 fathoms and inshore south of the harbour. Some would say the toothy leather jacket is a yearly pest but they are a good table fish.

Off the rocks salmon, also considered a pest, have arrived on our coast and as unpopular as they may be I am a fan of the fight and they make an excellent Thai fish cake. Tailor catches have dropped but the fish that are being caught are the larger of the species. CBT regular and fishing tragic Brendan Nguyen escaped the southerly with his mates at Charlesworth Bay and landed a 2kg Tailor on a salted pilchard. Brendan wins the voucher this week for his efforts, well done champ. Off the North wall this week you may have been amongst us frustrated fisher folk trying to land one of the Bonito that have been chasing the bait fish around the harbour. The bait fish are predominantly 30mm glassy at the moment if you want to match a lure. Bream and Luderick are still fishing well and Fishing Column legend Shane “Chooky” Geist weighed in a nice Luderick around 1.2 kg which he caught at the south wall on a mullet bait proving that the highly prized and ever rare “weed” is not the only way to skin a luderick. The marina has been sheltering some large fish during the big seas and many left their tackle wrapped around the piers and those fishing light never stood a chance. On a down note I did pick up a lot of rubbish there this week and I urge those litterers to take a more custodial view as many fisher folk do.

The Estuaries are still fishing well for Flathead and Bream. I’ve heard nothing of the crab situation and would be glad to hear from anyone wishing to contribute to this column. I can be contacted at Coffs Bait & Tackle. The rain didn’t seem to slow things down much and Jason Roger reports that Coffs Creek has provided him a fish dinner most nights of this past week with fresh baits proving more popular than plastics around the deeper holes.

The Tides and Moon this week are not as good as last, so sunset and sunrise will be the best time to throw one in.

Thats all until next week.
