Coffs Harbour Fishing Report - 2008/07/16 11:07 Did you feel like getting out your spear gun? I bet plenty did with visibility like the last few days. The fishing was a little slower and that may be because the fish could see us from 50 metres down. Luckily there are some hungry fish around right now and most fisher folk are catching a family dinner. There are pan size snapper in numbers in close and out wide. Russell Block pulled up a 6.45kg Snapper at Pig Island & Chris Thorencroft did well off Bullocky with a 4.4 Snapper.
Land Base fisher folk were taking less fish in general this past week but the keepers had some size. Scott Davies picked up a 2 kg Tailor off Mutton Bird as did Deon Atkins. Scott’s picture came out of the barrel and he wins a $20 bait voucher this week. Mutton Bird fished well all week for salmon & Tailor and provided the best seats for watching the whale show.
The Estuaries also went a little quiet but this could be the calm before the storm. I’m told by a reliable source that traditionally the Bellinger is about to come into some good fishing with Mulloway being the main prize. It makes sense because we do have some tops Jew fishing tides coming up. In fact the week ahead looks good for all fisher folk, weather pending.
This week is the first of hopefully many regular contributions from Ray at Woolgoolga Beach Caravan Park with his Woopi Kayakers Report. Please don’t hesitate to contact Coffs Bait & Tackle if you’d like to contribute to the column. Perhaps there’s a spearo out there with something to report. That’s it for me this week, take care till next week.
Woopi Kayakers Report
The seas calmed down enough to allow Wal & Doug out to their favourite spot early on Wednesday morning. No wind, slight sea, glorious morning...magic !! Wal is having a great time with the snapper lately, & hooked three nice fish up to around 2.5 kg. They certainly love this soft plastic, don't they. Doug didn't have too much joy that morning, but he still had the smile on his face from his previous outing when he tangled with a 21kg longtail tuna. The fish was towing Doug out to sea at a great rate of knots until Doug decided to play dirty & got another kayaker, Chris, to hang on to him. Didn't bother the fish. Both kayaks were towed approximately 2ks off shore before they were able to secure the fish. A fisho in a boat told us later that he saw Doug & Chris going past him like a pair of jetski's. I can just picture the looks on their faces. Priceless !!!
It’s official. Doug has lost his mojo !!! He went out with Wal & Chris on Sunday morning, both other guys catching fish (snapper & tailor), & Doug coming home empty handed. Hang in there mate. We are all hoping to get out on Tuesday morning, so maybe that will be his day he gets his mojo back.
If there is anyone around the Woopi area with a kayak, give us a call & come out with us. We can’t guarantee a fish, but we normally have a great time.
