OUTSIDE
With more strong winds about over the last week very little to report from the offshore scene but I do have a report from the hot currents tournament that a couple of the local boys fishing aboard DILLIGAF scoring a huge blue marlin that weighed in at an incredible 281kg. The fish was caught by local angler Will Costa and skippered by John Costa. Shep has just loaded the picture up on the webpage. Other than that report I didn’t hear a lot due to the fact that Saturday was the only day of the tournament but I will update next week once I have a few better reports. Further inshore the snapper have slowed over the inshore reef areas with most catches coming from the 40 – 80mtr mark with the gravel patch south of the 21 producing quality mixed bags of Squire, Morwong, Nanigai and the odd school Jew. I reckon that those Traglin should start to show over the next few weeks, especially as the water warms give areas like the Gibber Reef, the 21, the Tank mark all the way down to Uralla and Uralla wide reefs. Best bet for a mixed bag is a combination of floating baits and live baits on the bottom fished amongst a berley trail. On the inshore pelagics I have started to hear rumours of bonito and tailor, so summer is well underway now. Get out there and start trolling a couple of skirted lures or deep divers. I did hear of some excellent catches of sand flathead of seal rocks from reports they are all big.

BEACHES
Very little to report of the beach at the moment with strong winds stopping most of us from wetting a line. I did hear of a few whiting falling victim to live worms from Fingal and Stockton beach along with the odd bream but it sounds like the fish are a bit on the thin side with long hours needed for a feed. Tailor are also starting to show again but the salmon are still outnumbering them ten fold. Jewfish will start to be available with the moon at the moment it should be well worth a flick.

ROCKS
Rocks have been a little quiet this last week with very little to report besides the odd bream or tarwine caught from the washes with bait or a few salmon and tailor for those chucking lures around I have heard that boat harbour headland or Tomaree are the go, with the odd bonito mixed amongst them. If you can find a calm sheltered bay try your luck for a few calamari as they should be about in good numbers now.

ESTUARY
Kingfish are still the talk around the port with bruiser hoodlums over 20kg swimming around inside the port. I will say that these are very educated fish as they will not just eat anything thrown their way with both myself and Paul sneaking down over the week to try to remove one of these hoodlums but still for no result. The best way to target these fish is with very heavy tackle and live baits or medium to heavy tackle spin gear (20lb – 30lb braid with a 30-40lb fluorocarbon or tough mono leader should do the trick from a boat good luck if you are shore based) and I reckon a boat is the only way to go but one angler has removed a ripper of a fish at about 7-8kg from the rocks with 30lb braid. Well done Glen - what a ripper of a fish especially from the rocks. Elsewhere inside the port flathead are everywhere up the creeks with cricket score catches been tallied up by more than a few people - just remember when flathead are like this to only keep what you can eat as killing a heap of flathead to fill the freezer is really a no go this time of year and you don’t have an excuse to sneak out for a flick when you have fish in the freezer. Trumpeter whiting are about ‘en mass’ at the moment just remember that trumpeter are shorter fatter fish with a light discolouration of bands across the back they rarely grow bigger than 30cm so have no size limit - the sand or yellowfin whiting are skinnier and have yellowfins both front and back on the bottom of the fish and a size limit of 27cm, as always if in doubt throw the fish back as it is better than a fine.
