F1 Boats - Gold Coast - 2008/10/27 22:24 Don't Miss The F1 Superboat Grand Finale
STARTING FRIDAY 31ST OCTOBER - SUNDAY 2ND NOVEMBER
THE SPIT, MARINE STADIUM - MAIN BEACH - GOLD COAST "THE FASTEST SHOW ON WATER"

The F1 Superboat Series Management team will stage the 2008 Superboat Spectacular, and in conjunction with the Australian Power Boat Association and the UIM General Assembly will take this opportunity to showcase our World Class sport. Powerboat racing is one of the most thrilling and dynamic motor sports with many events allowing spectators to see the entire circuit. With speeds up to 240kph, an exciting programme is promised every time.

The Australian F1 Superboat Series Grand Final incorporating the 2008 Superboat Spectacular and the UIM Annual General Assembly, is being staged on the Gold Coast the weekend after the Nikon Indy 300 with the The F1 Superboat Grand Finale and Superboat Spectacular included as an Official Indy Off Track Event.

The volume of classes will include the F1, F2, Mono’s, Jet Skis, Juniors, Offshore Powerboats, Full Blown Inboards, 6 litre Class, and a host of other promotional activities over the weekend as well as displays and presence from the International Delegates from between 65-75 International Power Boating countries and some of the F1 World Series drivers - most of whom will be here for the first time to attend the UIM Annual General Assembly with the potential of securing and staging an F1 - F2 International Round in Australia.

We are anticipating crowds upwards of 15 000 over the course of the week, including all relevant functions. A myriad of hospitality functions are in place including the Official UIM Welcome Cocktail Party on the Q1 Observation Deck with attendance from some of the World's current champion drivers and local dignitaries, UIM Gala Dinner to be hosted at Sea World Nara Resort, the Preliminary Heats and Official crowning of the 2008 Miss F1 Supergirl Quest (the 'Miss Indy of the Water') Saturday Night at SinCity Night Club with the winner taking home more than $10 000 in cash and prizes and become the face of the F1 Superboat 2009 Series), entertainment on/off site - all generating local, national and International media exposure.

This only touches on the number of activities surrounding this event and may also prove attractive to medium-large corporations via networking and hospitality opportunities (entertaining key clients/staff/guests within our exclusive VIP Marquees) as well as involvement through corporate sponsorship of the Event.

The three day Grand Finale will consist of a Media Day on the Friday 31st October show casing these magnificent high powered machines , followed by an Official Offshore Powerboat Race on the Friday afternoon, and then a two day Powerboat Spectacular including Round 7 of the F1 Superboat Series and featuring all the top classes that compete around Australia. as well as having different activities through out the day including Scouts Australia parachute Jump and several other demonstrations.

These classes will include the high powered F1 Superboats, Formula 2000, Stock Mono Hulls, Jet Skis, Blown Alcohol Displacements, 6 litre, and also the up and coming Junior Racers. Other support classes make up a jam packed program of high octane action, providing brilliant value entertainment for racing fans and families alike. Not only are we anticipating this event to attract around 100 competitors and it is expected to be one of the most patronised powerboat meetings in Australia.

It will draw thousands of people including teams, supporters, racing fans and spectators from all over Australia and New Zealand. To add to the large international exposure, an invitation has been offered to International Drivers to take part in a challenge during this event using Australian crafts. Considering the event will be witnessed by such a large contingent of International spectators it will be a perfect finale to the General Assembly with all UIM delegates transported to the event location on Sunday once the General Assembly has been drawn to a close.

Over the past few years the growth of Power Boat Racing has grown significantly due to the increasing number of Major National Races being held throughout Australia. As this is a first for both the F1 Superboat Series followers, Australian Power Boat Racing fans, and Offshore Classes, having the opportunity to witness a combination of these classes it is anticipated that the attendance over the three days would be one of the largest expected for a Power Boat Race.

Australia's elite Competitors are expected to compete and joining them are crews and associates attracting over 600 attendees. Combining these figures makes available a considerable opportunity for a major spectator attendance over the three days. The Australian F1 Superboat Series and Power Boat Racing in general, reaches a highly desirable target demographic of fans, consisting of a strong mix of male, female and families alike.

At most power boat races a strong attendance by whole family units far exceeds those of other forms of motorsport.

Re:F1 Boats - Gold Coast - 2008/11/06 09:39 Shane Vellla 2008 Australian F1 Champion
A sun drenched view is not what greeted the Grand Finale round on Sunday. Dark skies, a faint breeze and mild temperatures were on offer, compared to a sunny but windy Saturday. We also saw the arrival of the delegates from the UIM, making a visit to Australia for a conference and to witness the Australian arm of the F1 Superboats in action.
Qualifying and racing for the F1 Superboats got under way, after the Juniors and the exciting Blown Unlimited and 6 litre engines put on yet another spectacular show at The Spit. The simply indescribable sound of a supercharged race engine raised smiles, grins of disbelief and bleeding ears, metaphorically.
After the southerly winds on Saturday allowed, under a duty of care situation, just one race for the Juniors, also known as the Formula Futures was run. With flatter conditions, the Juniors would have run all day, such was the enthusiasm. The little mono’s and a couple of tunnel hulled styled boats delighted the crowd and with young Jesse Aggar making a return to the water after a brief hospital visit (he fell off his scooter!) we hope to see them back in ’09.

After Saturday’s shenanigans, the Monos were back out on Sunday. Greg Adams won the first race, still a little sore from his spectacular crash on Saturday. David Ainley in the #33 Bullet Express was second with Gavin Simmons holding out young gun Ben Anderson. The second race was a reversal win wise, with Adams in second, a great run from Ainley and some superb trim work placing him in first, whilst Simmons and Anderson kept their positions. Ben thrilled the masses with some amazing air gathering runs, leading the series commentator to suggest he should be a stunt driver!

Race one for the F2000 category was samo samo for Grant Trask, taking the win over a resurgent Michael Page after qualifying for pole. David Wedlock charged hard for third with issues striking the #65 of Matt Smith. The Newcastle Machine Shop entry didn’t make it out for race two, leaving Page to blitz Trask (he was given a time penalty for hitting a marker buoy) and Wedlock. The #3 Townsville North QLD craft of Wedlock was out accelerating Trask on the back straight; Smith later finding that his problem was the proverbial “50 cent piece”, with an ignition wire failing. Race three had Page leading for half the event; Trask eventually hauled in the veteran pilot for a win and sealing the 2008 Formula 2000 championship in emphatic style. Wedlock shaded his mate and rival Smith to come in third.

Qualifying for the F1s saw the #14 Byron Bay Premium Ale craft, piloted by Rhys Coles, peel off an absolute blinder. Cracking the 26 second mark, Rhys wasn’t headed, leading Bob Trask by a full 4/10ths; especially exciting after trim issues the day before were rectified late Saturday night. This fed into race 1, where a delighted Rhys Coles, in his final race round as a pilot, brought the #14 craft home by a massive margin, over series leader Shane Vella. Gavin Bricker’s #6 craft suffered undiagnosed problems at the time, withdrawing from race 1 and unable to come out for races 2 and 3.

Race two saw McEnnally withdraw after just a lap or two; fuel injection problems seeing revs down and a corresponding power loss. At the 11th hour, a problem plagued #11 XLR8 Home Loans made it out, only to circulate slowly, to at least classify as a finisher. Vital, with points on the line, for a series second or third. Vella finished a clear second; McKenzie home in third comfortably ahead of the #19 TDC entry of Bob Trask.

Vella, with the series sown up, eased his yellow craft around the circuit, placing fourth for race three. Truslove’s problems stuck, leaving Craig unable to do more than circulate to get points, with Gavin Bricker again not making the field at all. Truslove commented later that the team was simply unable to find what the problem was. McKenzie and Bob Trask went head to head, with Trask ultimately home in second over McKenzie. This left Rhys Coles, in his final race in 2008, before moving to an engineering role with the Trask Development Corporation, to make it a round three peat, to the great delight of the team, sponsors and family. Performing the waterborne equivalent of a doughnut, an ecstatic Coles carried the chequered flag past the crowd and the clapping UIM delegates.

The round presentations were done in front of and including the UIM President, Dr. Raffaele Chiulli, F1 Superboat Director, Kirk Tsaccounis and APBA head Tony Walsh. Shane Vella was later crowned the 2008 series champion at the 2008 Awards function, to tumultuous applause. An emotional Vella made it clear that his win was due to his wife, family and the unswavering support from his crew. Congratulations Shane. Good luck to Rhys and let’s hope 2009 brings a smooth track.
