Sydney - Gold Coast race 2008 - 2008/07/27 21:24 Bob Steel’s TP52 Quest led the fleet out of Sydney Heads this afternoon in the 2008 Audi Sydney to Gold Coast Race.

After the oil tanker Diamond Queen ploughed up the harbour, the fleet was held for around 15 minutes.

At the start Jamie McPhail drove Quest from the eastern end of the line on port gybe in a 3-4 knot south wester and she was not headed in the gradually building breeze.

Bob Oatley’s Wild Oats X, the canting keel Reichel Pugh 66 was expected to win the race to the heads but she had, in helmsman Mark Richards terms, ‘an ordinary start’.

She was on the second row at the western end of the Nielsen Park start line and just never managed to get powered up, while the TP52's -Syd Fischer’s Ragamuffin, Alan Whitley’s Cookson TP52 Cougar and Quest had the best of the conditions.

At Sydney Heads Quest lead the fleet easily from Cougar, then another TP52 Graham Woods Wot Now, were ahead of Ray Roberts' Cookson 50 Quantum Racing.

Behind them was Ragamuffin and Geoff Ross' Yendys and Geoff Boettcher’s shiny new silver Secret Mens Business III with a silvery Australian flag emblazoned on her beam, looking well placed.

As the fleet headed north on a shy reach, the wind had freshened to 10 knots and was still from the southwest, with a slight swell, sunshine and puffy clouds, and it was postcard sailing for most of fleet.

It seemed the only crew not enjoying the day was on the Getaway Sailing Volvo 60, flying her kite from the masthead like a flag.

Re:Sydney - Gold Coast race 2008 - 2008/07/31 20:46 Ray Roberts Cookson 50 Quantum Racing crossed the finish line at 0719 this morning to take line hours in the 334 nautical mile 2008 Audi Sydney to Gold Coast Race.

Bob Steel’s TP52 Quest was just minutes behind as the boats closed on the Main Beach finish line with Geoff Ross Reichel Pugh Yendys two miles astern.

On IRC handicap, Quantum Racing is leading Division 0 and looks set to take the overall crown, with Quest on top of Division 1 and is second on handicap at the moment.

Quest finished at 8:42am, with Yendys 12 minutes behind her. Then came Matthew Short's Shortwave at 10:46, Syd Fischers Ragamuffin at 11:25 and Alan Whitley's Cookson TP52 Cougar II two minutes later.

Dockside Ray Robert smiled, 'Our plan was always to go wide to find the westerly pressure, and we did that fairly late in the first night. It turned out to be the decisive part of the race. It was the widest I’ve ever been in 15 years of Southport races. We were nervous, but I guess it was a courageous step.'

Bob Steel was please too when he stepped ashore. 'That is the first time I’ve ever led a fleet out of the Harbour. To have Wild Oats X and Wild Joe behind us, was a great thrill.'

Quest tactician Julian Planet commented ‘Our start was glamour. We were mid line, when we gybed we had clear air and we were able to roll the boats below us.

'Ray and his team sailed a great race. We too went wide; we chipped out in steps on the shifts. We were well placed offshore but lost two spinnakers and just did not have the power we needed after that. We had some short sharp seas and some big gusts. We surfed down one wave and came to a sharp stop at the bottom and lost our A3 and we lost our A4 in a wind check and that was the boat race.'
