FORMER SURF STARS STEAL THE LIMELIGHT AT NSW MASTERS

BLACKSMITH'S BEACH: Former leading professional ironmen Jonathon Crowe, Scott Thompson and Paul Lemmon turned back the clock to steal the show at the Allphones Masters NSW Surf Life Saving Championships at Blacksmith’s Beach, Swansea Belmont today.

Crowe, one of the real stars of the Iron Man Super Series in the 1990s, showed he still has class to burn with two dominant performances to win the ironman and the surf race gold medals in the 35-39 years division.

After five years away from surf lifesaving, Crowe will now set his sights on the younger brigade in the NSW Open Championships, where he will take on the likes of Cronulla’s dynamic duo Nathan Smith and Chris Allum, beginning tomorrow.

Crow showed he had lost none of his touch – winning the ironman from Scott Allen (Wanda) and another former iron man Shane Whittaker (North Cronulla) and the surf race from former stillwater swimming star Craig Boetcher (Caves Beach) with Whittaker again taking the bronze.

“It’s great to be back – I’ve been away in North Queensland for four-and-half years and to come back and have a paddle with the boys is great,” said Crowe.

“I’m looking forward to the weekend and we’ll just have some fun I’m sure.”

Crowe also combined with North Wollongong team mates Mark Norris and Rob Barry to win the over 110 years Taplin Relay before they finished second to the Tommy Woodriff led Bronte in the ski relay, while Norris was second in the 30-34 years surf race.

Meanwhile Thompson (North Bondi) and Lemmon (Terrigal) showed age had not wearied them as they staged a battle royal for the 40-44 years State ironman title.

Thompson and Lemmon have been racing each other for over 20 years and know when they line up it’s going to be a race between the two of them.

“Today was my day in the ironman,” said Lemmon, who missed a turning buoy in the ski and had to recover before swimming Thompson down in the last leg.

“It always comes down to the two of us and I knew with the swim last I had a great chance.”

Lemmon also lowered Thompson’s colours in the surf race with Darren Jones from Queenscliff taking the bronze in a blanket finish.

But Thompson, who, like Crowe, was one of the stars of the professional series for over a decade, racing against the likes of Trevor Hendy, Guy Leech, Darren and Dean Mercer and Craig Riddington, had a successful day in the North Bondi office.

He steered the club to wins in the ski relay, Taplin Relay and open beach relay and minor medals in the board relay, surf teams and double ski.

Lemmon, who also coaches the Terrigal under 15s and under 17s, has dedicated his life to surf lifesaving – and represented the Central Coast for 20 years – captaining them in his final year.

And he issued a warning to the rest of the State – “watch out for the Terrigal boys in the under 17s.”

Meanwhile the over 150 years age group saw the famous Wanda brothers – Greg, Chris and Doug Iredale combine to win the board relay before finishing second in the surf teams.

The Iredale family has been synonymous in the Wanda cap for over 50 years and the boys didn’t let the family name down, showing surf skills and stamina in some outstanding all-round performances.

Doug used his surf sense to guide his ski over the finish in the men’s single ski while Chris and Greg finished second and third respectively in the 50-54 years ironman.

In other events: Former Australian open women’s surf race champion Jacqui Robinson (South Maroubra) won the 35-39 years iron woman and tube race double and finished second to Sue Bell (Stanwell Park) in the surf race.

Former South Sydney Rabbitoh Darren Schott showed he is still one of the best board paddlers in the business, winning the 40-44 years board race from Maroubra team mate AJ Payne and the pair combined with the legendary Peter Kirkwood to win the board relay.

In the overall pointscore it was Queenscliff (149) who were triumphant over fellow Sydney Northern Beaches club, Manly (120), Swansea Belmont (118.5), Newport (111), North Bondi (99), Avoca (79), North Avoca and North Cronulla (75)and Bondi (73).

Queenscliff’s stand out performance came in the 40-44 years men’s beach sprint with Brian Dolly, Michael Gedz and Stephen Hoy claiming a rare trifecta for the championship winning club before they added Steve Nelson to win the 170s years beach relay.
