Hanso’s Highlights
Ian Hanson provides his highlights of the 2008 NSW Allphones Masters Surf Life Saving Championships
FAR NORTH COAST:
Mathew Nelson held up the end for the Far North Coasters landing the 30-34 years beach sprint-beach flags double for Cudgen Headland, while his club mate Janice Gielis has been proclaimed an official “Bronzed Aussie” with her trio of bronze medals in the 55 years ironwoman, beach sprint and board race.
NORTH COAST:
Emma Sutton from Urunga is the toast of the north coast after winning the region’s only medal at the Masters Championships – silver in the 40-44 years board race.
MID NORTH COAST:
Port Macquarie’s Fred Middleton – ski paddler extraordinare – just keeps on keeping on, winning gold in the 55-59 years single ski from team mate Gary Smith before the boys teamed up to win the double and then spearheaded Port to silver in the 150 years ski relay with Taking Point third. Fred then showed he’s still got that iron will to finished third in the iron man.
LOWER NORTH COAST:
When it comes to speed across the sand then Freddie Atkins from Crowdy Head is the man. Freddie won gold in the 65 years plus beach sprint – one of two mid north coast males to win gold medals. The other being former Collaroy stalwart John Ward who has speed across the water, winning the 65 years plus rescue tube. Couple of golden oldies if ever there was two. But the clubs from Forster, Black Head and Pacific Palms also added to the medal tally with a touch of “female power” from Laura Thurtell (Forster) winning silver in the 40-44 years surf race; Pat Powell (Pacific Palms) gold in the 55 years plus beach flags and silver in the sprint and Noelene Young (Black Head) silver in the50-54 years board race.
HUNTER:
The Rees brothers Matthew and Marty from Swansea Belmont were in the medal hunt – Matt winning the 35-39 years ski and Martin silver in the 35-39 years board. Power-packed Bruce McDonald (Dixon Park) continued his success taking out the 55-59 years surf race while the longstanding Caves Beach combo of Chez Suska and John MacKenzie won the double ski and finished second and third in the single in the 60-64 years age group. Cooks Hill, with Joel de Carle in full cry held Swansea Belmont vat Bay in the 110 years board relay. In the female events it was Lisa Brown (Redhead) in the 30-39 years ski; Marilyn Clarence (Swansea Belmont) in the 50-54 years ironwoman and Michelle Kent (Redhead) in the 30-34 years board who led the god medal charge for Hunter’s fairer sex.
CENTRAL COAST:
The evergreen Paul Lemmon – who represented Central Coast for 20 straight years in the Inter-Branch continued his medal collection – taking gold in the 40-44 years ironman and surf race – keeping the great Scott Thompson (North Bondi) at bay. Other notables to claim gold were former under 15 State surf race champion Don Boland (now with Avoca Beach) in the 50-54 years surf race; the North Avoca boys in the 150 years surf teams; Nigel Tebb (Avoca) in the 35-39 years board; Colleen Harrison (North Avoca) in the 40-44 years iron woman and Kylie Stewart (Wamberal) who won the beach sprint-flags double in the 35-39 years. The Wamberal beachies won the best colour-co-ordination with their striking maroon and white outfits and full marks to North Avoca coach Peter “Buster” Noble.
SYDNEY NORTHERN BEACHES:
Queenscliff are the masters of the Masters after they claimed the Championship pointscore on 149 points from fellow Sydney Northern Beaches club Manly (120) with Newport (111) fourth in a great showing from the Pine Street boys. Major highlight with out doubt came in the 40-44 years men’s beach sprint with Brian Dolly, Michael Gedz and Stephen Hoy claiming a rare trifecta for the championship winning club before they added Steve Nelson to win the 170s years beach relay. Other notable efforts came from the Royal Freshwater Surf ski Squadron – led by William Wilson, James Newman and Ian Wallace who won the 130 years ski relay; Martin Lynch led the Newport team to gold on the beach in the 55-59 years flags; Darren Jones, back at Queensie after a gold medal stint with Freshie last year won the 40-44 years tube from Newport pair James Brooks and Tim Francis, while Christie Krenkels (former Christie Bourke and daughter of Olympian and surf great Bruce Bourke) won the 40-44 years surf race and rescue tube and finished second in the ironwoman. Have to mention the great Anthony Vieceli who won the single ski in the 40-44 years age group, by a nose from Billy Wilson (Freshwater) and John de Mestre (Freshwater) who won the 45-49 years surf race from Stuart Meares (formerly of Palm Beach who is now part of the with Newport revival).
SYDNEY:
Scott Thompson flew the flag for Sydney and North Bondi – winning nine medals – including gold in the board rescue; the beach relay; the ski relay and the Taplin – and he wins the club man of the year award – hands down. The Iredale brothers Chris, Greg (who does patrols at Nambucca) and Doug won the family award for their efforts to combine in the board relay before finishing second in the surf teams. The Iredale family has been synonymous in the famous Wanda cap for over 50 years and the boys didn’t let the family name down, showing surf skills and stamina in some outstanding all-round performances. Doug used his surf sense to guide his ski over the finish in the men’s single ski while Chris and Greg finished second and third respectively in the 50-54 years ironman before Greg and Chris combined to win the board rescue. Special mention also goes to John MacNamee from Clovelly who finally cracked it for a gold in the 60-64 years beach sprint after playing second fiddle to Queenscliff’s Paul Hammond in the State, Australian and World Championships over the past four years. Certainly one to write home about. Finally to “hi ho silver” Simon Storry from North Bondi who won five silver medals from five starts in the craft area. He can take solace from John MacNamee and come back for gold next year.
ILLAWARRA:
Jonathon Crowe showed he is still one of the fittest masters around winning the 35-39 years iron man and surf race and joining with his team mates Mark Norris and Rob Barry to win the surf teams. Keith Miller chalked up another gold for Bulli in the 45-49 years ironman as did the evergreen Jeff Banks (Fairymeadow) in the 55-59 years ironman while Larry Jennett (Wollongong City) and Allen Williams (Towradgi) won their respective 55-59 and 60-64 years board races. In the female ranks it was Susan Bell (Helensburg-Stanwell Park) who won the 35-39 years surf race and she added silver in the ironwoman while Colleen Fennell (Thirroul) won the 30-34 years beach flags.
SOUTH COAST:
Take a bow Warilla-Barrack Point, especially pair Craig Burke who won double gold in the 35-39 rescue tube and combined with Craig Bossyi to win the board rescue and to Point club mates Tony White who won the 50-54 years ski gold and Shane Dowell who was third in the 30-34 years iron man. Special mention to ken banks who won bronze in the 60 years plus iron man and to Olympic silver medallist from the 1984 LA Games Karen Phillips, now Karen Higginson who showed that winning smile of hers after taking silver in the 40-44 years rescue tube and bronze in the surf race.
FAR SOUTH COAST:
The lone ranger – Andy Baker (Moruya) won the region’s sole medal in the 50-54 years male rescue tube. Way to go Andy boy!
