A POWERBOAT rocketed across Sydney Harbour yesterday at speeds of up to 220km/h in a test run of the upcoming Superboat Grand Prix.

The trial run saw Team Maritimo Offshore race from Fort Denison to Shark Island and back again as it tested the proposed course.

Minister for Tourism Matt Brown said the races, held over two days in March, would showcase Sydney Harbour to international sporting audiences.

"The Sydney Superboat Grand Prix is a spectacular sporting event right here on the greatest harbour in the world,'' Mr Brown said.

"The excitement of this powerful boat reaching phenomenal speeds is a just a taste of what is to come.

"Cities hosting similar events have enjoyed significant economic impact as a result of the boost in tourism and we expect Sydney to receive similar benefits.''

Event director Paul Steer said the race was the culmination of almost two years of hard work and said there would be a variety of family activities planned to lure spectators.

This year's race features drivers from the Australian Offshore Racing Championship and next year the event will form part of the Superboat World Championships.

"This will see international entrants competing right here in Sydney Harbour as part of the World Class One Powerboat Championships, a terrific new international event for the Harbour City,'' Mr Steer said.

Mr Brown said the race would add to the catalogue of international events held in Australia.

"Melbourne has the F1 Grand Prix, the Gold Coast has the Indy Cars, Perth has the Red Bull Air Race and now Sydney has the Superboat Grand Prix which will be a huge boost for tourism in NSW,'' he said.
