F1 Boats Gold Coast - 2008/07/26 20:33 A Golden August Return For The F1 Superboats
A Roman emperor, Augustus, lent his name to the month known as August. It is August of 2008 that sees the arrow sharp Formula 1 Superboats of Australia return to the Gold Coast for the first of two rounds, the second being the highly anticipated “show off” for the UIM, the Union Internationale Motornautique, in November.

The F1 Superboat teams, Management and support staff head north to Queensland for the 23rd and 24th of August, refreshed and recharged after an unexpected break in the calendar. Director of the Australian F1 Superboats, Kirk Tsaccounis, says the weekend promises a lot of action, not just on the water but off.

“We’ve put the cancelled round behind us and we’re looking forward to returning to one of our favourite courses.” said Kirk. “We’ve got a good complement of teams in the F1’s, F2’s, Monos and the jetskis. A highlight for the weekend will be the Miss F1 Superboat contest, that’s sure to attract a lot of positive attention.”

One man itching to return to the water is Shane Vella. An explosively dominant round at Newcastle in June saw the yellow #61 Lindenvel boat take out the round with clean wins in the three F1 races. It was a bittersweet win for Vella in that his long term sponsors withdrew at the beginning of the year, leaving Vella and wife Cherie, to run the team using their own business as a backer. A determined and dogged fighter on the water, a taciturn Vella has showed true class in 2008 and leads the championship.

Rhys Coles will be hoping that déjà vu doesn’t apply to the Byron Bay Premium Ale team, after a collision in 2007 at the corresponding round put paid to his chances of making it back to back championships. Newcastle also wasn’t kind for the young Coles, with numerous mechanical issues plaguing the #14 craft.

Fingers will be crossed that the weather, this year having had influence on the rounds at Geelong and Newcastle, will be kind to racers and supporters alike, plus, with the added bonus of being a “dry run” for the international representatives in November, it’s shaping up to be a sensational event. Belt on the togas and strap on the sandals to join in the festivities of the “fastest show on water” as the F1 Superboat empire returns for a gold coated weekend in August, at Queensland’s beautiful Gold Coast.

Re:F1 Boats Gold Coast - 2008/08/17 09:14 Gold Coast Water Police Force Cancellation
Gold Coast Water Police force F1 Superboats to cancel Round 5 on the Gold Coast.

Due to on-going issues with Gold Coast Water Police regarding their spectator safety concerns we regret that due to a limited time frame and a longer than expected solution to these concerns, it is in the future best interests of the Series and those concerned to cancel the August round and work towards a positive result for the Grand Final in November.

Initial meetings, held back in April of this year have met with set backs, subsequently due to previous water incidents being a Thundercat incident involving two competitors (which has been addressed and this class no longer competes with the Series) and event incidents, not related to our events, on the Broadwater and the Spit. Water Police have since toughened up their safety regulations regarding all water sport and event activities with both parties not been able to reach a solution within the designated time frame of staging the event.

The Australian F1 Superboat Series Management have, over the course of this extended period, tried to work through Water Police issues and concerns, together with Marine Safety Queensland, by addressing each relevant point.

Given we have been classed as a “mini-Indy” event it has been expected that our infrastructure also reflects that standard. This also calls for a similar budget to be in place, which is not reflective of the size of the event.

Managing Director of the Series, Kirk Tsaccounis comments, "I am amazed we have been staging events for some ten years and in this time we have dealt and formed relationships with many Government Departments and Organisations in different States, all being very proactive and co operative in bringing our events to their region. The event on the Gold Coast has been an annual inclusion on the Gold Coast Events Calendar, being now in it’s 4th year in the region, with major support from Gold Coast City Council, Gold Coast Tourism and many Organisations. It is unfortunate that one entity can be so uncooperative and detrimental to the event and the Gold Coast region in general. We hope this improves for future events”.
