Coffs Harbour Fishing Report - 2008/07/02 09:32
It’s a great time of year for land based fishing with many large species coming in close to take advantage of the abundant prey fish. No doubt you’ve been seeing a few more salmon this week. We got some in to the shop as salmon is good mulloway, Snapper and tailor bait amongst others when skinned because they have a very firm oily flesh. The other advantage is that salmon don’t take salmon baits if you want to fish past them. The salmon have run past Coffs Harbour since previous to colonisation. Decades ago a cannery near Narooma wiped out the run to make cat food. Tailor took a beating in the days of the cannery too as they often swim with salmon and were also being used for cat food. Thankfully the Salmon are back and fish of 6kg are being caught at the moment. Amongst the run it makes sense that there are tailor of similarly large size. Salmon dries out easily when cooked so best results come from cooking whole in foil to retain moisture. A customer of ours at the shop was a navy cook and swears by his recipe which involves wrapping the fish and also stuffing the cavity with zucchini and garlic before roasting. Snapper are on the bite and Ray Williams picked up a stonker in his kayak over Whoopi reef. The 7.2kg specimen gave him the fight of his life and dragged him around the coast a bit before he managed land it. Also amongst the happy snappers was James Crook who did well again out at the patch, Graham Sutton and Shane Panton did well but Paul Cooper came in with an 8.9kg nobby that really impressed. Justin Taylor caught a 2.2kg flathead that he was very proud of and this week gets the $20 bait voucher from Coffs Bait & Tackle. Good on you Justin. Fisher folk are catching plenty of good size flat head at the moment as well as bream particularly in Boambee creek I’m told. Mud crabs are still around in Bonville and Urunga, thanks to the locals there for the information. Outside plenty of fish are coming in and the weather has been mostly excellent. Many boaties were chasing King fish this week successfully and those who got out early picked up trag and of course plenty of Snapper. Water temperature is still 20 degrees c and over in close and 20 and just below near the shelf. This week you should be a good chance to hook a salmon off the beach in skinny water all through the day with the larger ones coming out in the evening. With the new moon starting Thursday and a large high due to move over the Mid North Coast we should be in for some good fishing over the weekend. If you are a fan of moon phase fishing then midday and midnight are the times to fish this weekend. Good luck until next time.
