Coffs Harbour Fishing Report - 2008/07/09 16:46 Not bad weather really this past week and plenty of fisher folk to advantage. With the School holidays on the Marina has been very busy and the trevali are still in there for a bit fun. Take care though as there are also Black Trevali on the bite and if your unlucky enough to get spiked i'm told the pain is unforgettable. Around the Harbour Luderick are in numbers as well as smaller Bream & Tailor. I'm told there were a few Garfish hanging too.
Boambee Beach has been fishing fairly well despite being washed out. We've had reports of whiting about and Tailor taking surf poppers and light rigged pilchards. Gallows has turned up Bream over the a kilo mark and the odd snapper. Craig from Coffs Bait and Tackle has been amongst the snapper this week off land and had best results floating a bait around mid water column. The theory goes that a floating pilchard looks as though its just been hit by a predator. Snapper, much like Bream, will sit low in the water column beneath pelagics feeding on bait fish and pick up the scraps as they float to the bottom. A small luminous bead above the hook doesn't hurt either.
Outside its all snapper too by the sounds of it. The swell picked up for a few days there and there was the wind offshore to contend with but despite it all the fishings pretty good. Ray williams and his kayak gang where out amongst it and sent me the following correspondence; "five kayaks went out from Woopi beach early on Thursday morning. We were out at our favourite spot for around 1 1/2 hours & we managed to pick up 5 nice snapper to around 2.5 kg all on soft plastics, & spun up 4 great taylor around the 3 kg mark. Got back home just before the weather turned & we were STILL in time for breakfast." Talking to Ray over the past couple of weeks has strengthened my resolve to get myself a sea going Kayak. Its a growing trend amongst fisher folk and with the price of fuel I imagine there be plenty more taking it up. If you do, give some consideration to the rod you'll use, it should be no longer than your outstretched arms and have a good fighting tip to compensate the length. A shorter rod makes it far easier to re-bait or rig up whilst in the confines of a kayak.
Around the Estuauries it's still all Flat head, Bream and Luderick. Micks retreat turned up a few school Mulloway and Urunga is really turning it on in regards to Black fishing. Barry taylor was down there recently and bagged himself a nice 2.5kg Flathead. Further on at Repton I'm told the lads have been passing the time catching sharks behind the Norco factory. If your keen to bag a shark yourself i have some 800lb rigs here at the shop which should sort a few out. Hilly from Sawtell gave me a ring to say he's catching more crabs than the rest of us down at Bonville Creek and reports many of them are old males that no longer shed. You can tell these old boys easily from the barnacle growth across the shell.
Thats about all except to announce the winner of this weeks $20 bait voucher goes to Kai Noonan for his efforts which landed him his first trevali. Well done Kai, your a little champion.
Good luck, until next week.
