Re:Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2008 - 2008/07/27 21:21
The 2008 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam – Day Eight 26.07.08 - Marcilio Browne and Sarah-Quita Offringa fight their way to the top of the second single elimination, then fend off attacks from Ricardo Campello and Daida Moreno in the double to cement their positions at the top of the podium.
First on the day’s agenda was to finish up the second single elimination, which had been started the previous day. In the men’s fleet, this was quickly narrowed down to a semi final of Estredo (Fanatic, North, MFC) versus Browne (Mistral, Gaastra) and Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra) versus Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC).
Advancing into the final, Browne defeated Estredo to take the victory, leaving Estredo in second. And in the losers final, Campello beat Frans to take third, with Frans in fourth.
In the women’s fleet, a Daida Moreno (North) versus De Brendt (Fanatic, North) and Nagoshi (Simmer, Dakine) versus Offringa (Starboard, NeilPryde) semi final, saw Offringa and Daida Moreno emerge victorious, meaning they advanced into the final. The subsequent brawl was won by Offringa, with Moreno taking second, De Brendt third, and Nagoshi fourth.
After a short break, the second double elimination kicked off. In the wings, Browne and Offringa endured their second painstaking wait, while their rivals fought for the opportunity to challenge them for first place.
In the men’s double, Otaegui (JP, NeilPryde, MFC) made the most impressive comeback, rising through four heats before he finally fell at the hands of Thode (Starboard, Gaastra). Thode then departed courtesy of Tonky Frans.
Frans went on to battle with Campello, and despite landing a super clean air chachoo, couldn’t match Campello’s crazy shuvit spock and pushloop. With the stakes getting higher, Campello advanced to duel with Estredo. The awesome heat saw air flakas from both sailors, a backloop from Campello, and a one handed air funnel from Estredo. It was a tough call to make, but Campello was ultimately rewarded with victory, meaning he’d go on to battle with Browne in a repeat of the first double elimination.
Dropping off the boil, Browne made the mistake of giving Campello a bit of breathing space. Campello seized the opportunity, landing a shuvit spock, and an air funnel to defeat Browne.
To take the elimination, Campello then had to overthrow Browne one more time. Both sailors hit the water again, but this time it was Campello who had slacked off.
Browne punished the Venezuelan’s mistakes, landing an air funnel, and a before unheard of, air cana brava. The super slick display was enough to stop Campello in his tracks, and award Browne his second successive elimination victory.
In the women’s fleet, Treboux (Fanatic, North) bulldozed her way through the opposition, leaving victims Iballa Moreno (North), Alonso (Fanatic, Severne), Nagoshi (Simmer, Dakine) and De Brendt (Fanatic, North) in the wake of her resurgence.
Her stumbling block would come when she met Daida Moreno. A barrage of loops, and fully planning sliding moves condemned Treboux to third place, while the ever-determined Moreno advanced to take on the might of Offringa in the final.
The pair were evenly matched, Offringa landed a flaka and a funnel, to Moreno’s reply of a one footed forward, and a ponch. Right into the final minute of the heat it looked almost impossible to call a winner, then Offringa nailed an air flaka, and a flaka diablo. The moves were a killer blow for Moreno, who’d let victory escape her grasp. Winning, Offringa claimed her second elimination win of the event so far, and took one step closer to becoming 2008 World Champion.
Tomorrow’s skippers meeting is scheduled for 11.00 am, with the freestylers hitting the water from 11.30am onwards. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all of day nine’s trials and tribulations.

Re:Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2008 - 2008/07/29 06:49
The 2008 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam – Day Nine 27.07.08 - Untouchable, Sarah-Quita and Marcilio Browne are confirmed event winners, despite a spirited performance from Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo, who took victory in the third men’s single elimination on the penultimate day of competition.
Rolling onto the third successive elimination, day nine of competition served up a feast of freestyle trickery for the action hungry crowds. Looking dangerous, Antxon Otaegui (JP, NeilPryde, MFC) made his intentions clear as he crushed the hopes of rivals Tine Slabe (Naish) and Quincy Offringa (Starboard, Severne) thanks to his crazy air chachoos.
Otaegui’s downfall came when he met Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo in the quarter finals. Despite a solid performance from the Lanzarote local, he failed to match the former World Champion’s barrage of mind blowing moves, granting Estredo right of passage through to the semi finals. Joining him there were Ricardo Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC), Marcilio Browne (Mistral, Gaastra) and Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra).
Pairing off, Estredo challenged Campello, and Frans squared up against Browne in a clash that would decide who would advance into the final. The subsequent brawl was laced with jaw dropping moves, and was undoubtedly the finest heat of the day.
Exploding out the gates on the green flag, Campello threw a monster air chachoo, provoking rival Estredo to deliver his own version. Following suit, Frans then launched into the same move. Browne’s rebuttal came in the form of a super smooth one-handed air funnel.
High caliber moves provided an action packed backdrop to the monumental clash, but sadly only two of the four competitors would be awarded positions in the elimination final. After a tense few minutes in the judging tower, the winners were announced. Browne and Estredo bulldozed on through to the final, leaving Campello and Frans to duel in the losers final.
Fighting for third position, Campello threw everything he had at Frans, including a backloop, and a pushloop. Calm and collected, Frans bided his time and was eventually rewarded with a steep ramp to throw a towering air chachoo. This, combined with some polished sliding moves on the inside, was eventually enough to defeat Campello, who’d slightly lost his rhythm from previous days.
In the winners final, Browne sailed a solid heat, but had nothing on rival Estredo. More determined than ever, the Venezuelan threw down the biggest, and without a doubt, the best air chachoo seen all competition. Also landing a spock 900, a sky-high air flaka and a pushloop, Browne was eventually condemned to second position.
If Estredo can hold onto his lead in tomorrow’s double elimination, he has the opportunity to rob Campello of second place. The pressure is now on Campello to climb the ranks if he wants to keep hold of the precious number two podium spot.
Sitting pretty, Browne has already done enough to guarantee him the event win, regardless of what happens on the final day of competition.
In the women’s fleet, Yoli De Brendt (Fanatic, North) slipped out of the running after defeat by Junko Nagoshi (Simmer, Dakine) in the second round. Nagoshi then moved into the semi final to take on Offringa (Starboard, NeilPryde). The other side of the semi final saw Treboux (Fanatic, North) take on Daida Moreno (North).
In the ensuing bouts, Offringa was on her usual dominant form, sparing Nagoshi no mercy. The Japanese freestyler subsequently made her way to the losers final, alongside Moreno, who had been dispatched by Treboux.
In the day’s finale, Offringa continued her assault, landing an air flaka and a ponch. Treboux dug deep to reply, but some costly crashes haunted her score sheet, meaning she’d have to make do with second.
In the losers final, a destructive display from Moreno, who was flying high with whopping forward loops and slick spocks, met little reply from Nagoshi. Moreno went on to claim third position.
With the current standings, Offringa is guaranteed the event victory, but it could be all change to positions two and three, depending on the double elimination’s outcome on day 10.
Tomorrow’s skippers meeting is scheduled for 10.30 am, with the freestylers hitting the water from 11.00am onwards. Be sure to tune into pwaworldtour.com to follow all the action from the final day of competition.

Re:Fuerteventura Grand Slam 2008 - 2008/07/29 06:51
The 2008 Fuerteventura PWA Grand Slam – Day Ten 28.07.08 - Jose Estredo overthrows Marcilio Browne to win the third and final elimination of the event, and Sarah-Quita Offringa stamps her authority on the competition, defeating Daida Moreno in the double elimination final to complete her perfect run of first place finishes.
Entering the final day of competition, the top positions in both the men’s and women’s fleets had already been decided upon, after Marcilio Browne (Mistral, Gaastra) and Sarah-Quita Offringa (Starboard, NeilPryde) dominated the first two eliminations, making them effectively untouchable.
However, in both fleets the remaining positions on the podium were wide open, with the subsequent third double elimination proving crucial for all involved.
In the men’s elimination, Kiri Thode (Starboard, Gaastra) had given himself the most work to do if he wanted to bag a place on the podium. He started his assault six heats back from the final, by beating Anthony Ruenes (Tabou, Gaastra).
Gaining momentum and looking evermore dangerous, Normen Gunzlein (JP, NeilPryde) and Antxon Otaegui (JP, NeilPryde, MFC) were Thode’s next victims, before he sat on a collision course with Ricardo Campello, who had his sights firmly set on second position in the event.
When crunch time came, it was Thode who was packing the biggest blows. A barrage of air funnels and super slick triple spocks had Campello on the back foot, and some costly falls form Campello eventually awarded Thode the victory. Campello had still done enough to claim a podium position in third overall.
Moving onto challenge fellow Bonaire freestyler, Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra), Thode continued to lay down his flowing repertoire of sliding moves, and dizzying rotations, but came up against a brick wall. A monster flaka and immense air chachoo from Frans helped sway the judges decision his way.
One step away from the final, Frans squared up to the current freestyle world champion, Browne. The heat was off the scale, as the fiercely competitive duo threw all they had at each other. Frans’ downfall would come when his concentration lapsed, and he left his score sheet one move short. The error was punished by Browne, who progressed to line up against Estredo (Fanatic, North, MFC) in the decisive last heat of the day.
Final time, and Estredo drew the first blood with a towering air flaka, accompanied by a colossal air chachoo. Browne didn’t let Estredo’s aerial antics distract him, throwing down an assertive mix of an air chachoo, a misty flip, and a burner. Defiant Estredo shunned Brown’s attack, nailing a perfectly rotated air funnel 540, alongside a mix of freestyles most explosive moves.
A spate of falls from Browne towards the end of the heat proved to be critical. All too aware of the implications, Browne left the water with his head down. Estredo knew he’d done enough to win the heat, and claim second place overall for the event. Despite Browne’s loss, he still topped the event standings, and sits second overall for the 2008 season.
In the women’s fleet, Iballa Moreno (North) put an end to Nayra Alonso’s (Fanatic Severne) elimination run, before she dropped out of contention courtesy of Junko Nagoshi’s (Simmer, Dakine) tactical sailing.
Nagoshi then had her wits tested in a duel with Daida Moreno (North). The Japanese freestyler started the heat well, landing a forward loop and a flaka, but repeated moves on the same tack took their toll on her score sheet. Moreno was left free to advance thanks to a varied and higher scoring run that included a super clean goiter.
Moreno’s last hurdle before meeting Offringa in the final was Laura Treboux (Fanatic, North). Treboux wasted no time and quickly seized the early lead, landing a fully planning grubby right by the beach, and a spock on the outside.
Much to Moreno’s advantage, the waves then started to roll in, allowing her to land a massive forward loop, a shaka, and an awesome one handed goiter on the inside, which awarded her crucial points, and ultimately her ticket to challenge Offringa in the final.
Regardless of the outcome of the final, Offringa and Moreno had done enough to secure first and second position respectively, meaning the ensuing bout was going to be a battle of pride alone.
Hungry to continue her unbeaten run, Offringa launched into her usual assault of funnels, switch chachoos and air flakas. Opting for higher aerial moves, Moreno threw forward loops on both tacks, and her usual slick goiter on the inside. Despite a spirited performance from Moreno, she failed to match Offringa’s depth and technicality.
Maintaining her perfect run of first place finishes; Offringa added one more victory to her tally, extending her unprecedented run for the 2008 season.
