Coffs Fishing Report - 2008/08/05 16:49
Its all snapper right now but don't dismiss the Kingfish as they're also around. Though not as prized as snapper for the table Kingfish are tops fun. Kingie's will take all kinds of bait but the most popular amongst my regulars recently has been squid of the larger arrow head type in strips. The good thing about cutting up larger squid is that you can shape your bait, for example you might cut it with a long thin tail for jigging which gives you the action of a plastic yet it's a natural bait and costs less. The Leather jackets are out there at the moment too and you know how quick they can go through a packet of plastics. Having said all that though our winner this week, Shane Panton, caught his 6 kg snapper on a plastic lure that he bounced around the infamous and ever mysterious "Doggo Shoals". Land based fisher folk are doing alright its seems off the rocks particularly Sawtell and good old Mutton Bird Island. Many would already know but the timber jetty in the Harbour will be closed for awhile so if your a regular down there you might try off the harbour beach as it regularly fishes well for flathead and whiting. Try the Marine Parks office end, close in to the wall. The Bream are still in steady numbers about the place with the larger fish coming in from a wash like the gap at the quarry. A bit of weed about on the beaches has made things difficult on some of the northside beaches but at least the beach worms are getting a feed. The Estuaries didn't report a great deal this week but i noticed myself that there are big schools of Luderick moving up Coffs Creek and Matt from the surf life savers club tells me he spotted a couple of whiting as thick as his arm just under the bridge. Hilly from sawtell tells me he is still getting a share of crabs out of Bonville creek. The tides are awkward this week coming and the moon is in the first quarter so it's not traditionally a good fishing time but this is fishing and you can't pick it. If your a keen weather watcher like myself, check out this column and more at www.askhuey.com.au. All the best till next week.
Woopi Yakkers Ever have one of those weeks where you gaze out of the window at work & think how good it would be for fishing?? Then when you get your time off, the wind decides to blow like a banshee, the seas pick up big enough to frighten a frigate, & the temperature drops so low that you are looking around for the icebergs?? Yeah, me too. A few of the guys did manage to get out during the week with a little bit of success. The bigger snapper were a bit scarce, but Dave managed to bring three nice pan size fish in. Wal is still chasing those tailor & has been picking up some very nice sizes. He picked up two on Sunday morning that would have gone over the three kilo mark. The weather certainly SEEMS to be settling down, so hopefully we can get more time on the water in the next week or so. Kayaks certainly have their advantages in being able to get where some boats can't, but they are also hampered more by the weather. It doesn't matter how good the fishing may be, if the weather isn't right, it just isn't gonna happen. If there are any kayakers in the area who are interested in meeting up with like-minded folk, we are having a BBQ at Woolgoolga Beach Caravan Park on Saturday 16th August at around 1pm. (BYO everything). Figured it would be a good chance to compare notes on anything from rigs & yak setups to fishing spots & maybe even good paddles around the traps. Give me a call at the park for more info or just turn up on the day. Hope to see you there. Ray Woolgoolga Beach Caravan Park
