Coffs Harbour Fishing Report - 2008/08/13 09:24
At time of writing the sea from the jetty looks like a pond but just out a bit wider it's neptune's revenge and the bravest of the pro fisher folk were glad to come in early. Brett Knight walked in to the shop with a grin from ear to ear and a 7kg Snapper he caught on a live slimey off third headland and John Radford did well at Bullocky, weighing in a 6.5kg Snapper. The big fella's are there not far out it seems. Staying in close might keep you away from the @#$% leatherjackets as well which are tasty but frustrating. If your not catching much this week gone don't worry your not alone, every one seems to be a bit hard up. Never fear though because there is the full moon on Sunday and the tides are working at a respectable hour over the weekend. Boating fisher folk may find it hard to get out with a bit of wind and swell about but locally some of you may have noticed you can often sneak out before dawn on a predicted southerly and fish right through till mid morning before its too uncomfortable. Fingers crossed any way. Land based fisher folk are having more luck of it. Those who did catch a feed had to put more hours in but the fish did show up. Gallows Has fished better than most for Bream and Tailor. Jeff Hills weighed in a 1.3 Tailor and Mark Beales pulled out a Luderick close to a kilo around the corner at South Wall. Craig Smith from Coffs Bait & Tackle tells me he's getting plenty of tailor off Sawtell head land but that doesn't mean everyone is because i suspect that Craig is half fish half man. The Estuaries are turning up flat head still and they are a good species to target when fish aren't biting because if you can find one you'll often get a territorial hit. Wayne Elliot, aka Ace from Ace Power Motorcycles caught a 85cm flatty at Bonville over the weekend and he's still smiling. Might want to get the reel serviced after that monster. This week there's two winners of the "Fish Pics" competition; Brett Knight and Ace. Well done Lads. Not many females weighing in lately so come on ladies, it's not that cold. Thats it for me, good luck over the next week and remember we're here at the shop from 5 am every weekend if you need some fresh bait and gear for a pre-dawn assault. Dan Woopi Yakkas A few guys dragged themselves away from the Olympics to wet a line on the weekend & managed to find a few nice fish. Col from Skee Mullaway went out wide on Friday & picked up a beautiful 3kg pearl perch & a few smaller pan size fish. Doug & Wal went out on both Saturday & Sunday mornings & managed to get a few very nice feeds of snapper & tailor both days. Peter Goodenough then tried his secret spot & come home with 3 great pearl perch & a snapper. I went out last Thursday & caught a cold. Think my technique is lacking. Things have been very quiet on the in-close reefs the last few weeks due to the weather. It has either been to rough to get out, or the water has been crystal clear, so it’s good to know the fish are still there waiting for us. The water has been absolutely magic the last few days. Early mornings give us almost mirror-like smooth waters, a little bit cool, but it doesn’t take too long to warm up once you start paddling, & then clear blue skies once the sun gets up. Certainly makes you understand why we want to live in this piece of paradise, doesn’t it.
Don’t forget the BBQ at Woolgoolga Beach Caravan Park on Saturday at 1pm. We figured this would be a perfect way for some of the kayakers around the area to get to meet & compare notes. If you want more info, just give me a call at the Caravan Park on 66541373 or just turn up on the day ( BYO ). I know also there have been a few other kayakers getting out from up this way & coming home with a few nice fish. If you want your catch mentioned in this report, give me a call with the details.
