Port Stephens Fishing Report - 2008/08/18 12:57 Friday 15/08/ 2008

OUTSIDE
Yellow fin have been pretty quiet throughout the week with no reports of fish being taken. Excellent snapper to 7kg coming from Edith breaker and the saddles for those willing to travel. Closer to home theres not much to report as far as reds go. This is the best time of year to fish the washes from Broughton Island all the way down to rocky. The white water at the moment is holding Stacks of drummer bream and luderick and you’re always in with a chance of pulling a red out. The calm waters at the moment are great to target squid some of the best places are hospital bay on the inside of big island and the gantry at Fingal Island.
Groper also love the calm water and in amongst the bomboras out the front of Fingal Island holds some beasts. Further north the shallow reefs around broughton, the sister’s and the little gibber are other big groper haunts

BEACHES
There are some quality tailor getting around on the beaches but getting through all the salmon can prove very difficult. Fish cakes are absolutely everywhere at the moment so if your after a bit of fun rather then a quality feed Stockton beach and Fingal bay are as sure bets as you can get . Apart from the occasional bream and odd whiting in the gutters the beaches are pretty dead. I did hear some unconfirmed reports of a few jewfish coming from Stockton beach though.

ROCKS
The rocks are still firing with all the winter species turning it on. Luderick and drummer continue to rule the white water from Tommoree torpedo tubes down to boat harbour with the occasional solid bream amongst them. Tailor and salmon are another option from the stones. Whole pilchards and garfish rigged on gang hooks or tossing metal lures in the 20-65g class are your best ways to target from places like box beach Barry Park and boulder bay all are proven tailor spots. The flat conditions at the moment are ideal to target blue groper from the rocks get yourself some crabs a packet of 5/0 mustad hoodlums toss her out and hang on. Squid are also worth chasing in some of the calm bays and coves around the area

ESTUARY
Luderick have been biting there heads off all week with the only hassle being the strong westerly winds. Those who have braved the breeze little beach has been producing some excellent quality luderick. The smaller nelson bay break wall is a great spot to get out of the wind and has been producing its fair share of fish.
Plenty of whiting still around those who think that whiting are just a summer time option need to think again the months from June through to September are great for whiting live worms fished over the sand at night on the high tide is the way to go
Bream have been fairly quiet for this time of year but if you work hard you should be able to take a feed from the racks around soldiers point areas as well as dalbora and the anchorage marina.
