Coffs Harbour Fishing Report - 2008/08/20 13:13
The Pro's aren't real happy with the previous weeks weather or catches. The moon cycle we just had is traditionally good fishing but from what i'm hearing it's all a bit quiet. Seems catches are down for many fisherfolk but a lucky few have been in the right place at the right time like those who fished Moonee and came away with Mullaway for dinner. Same at Saphire Beach though it slowed over the weekend. Luke Panton managed to haul in a Tailor over 3kg at Saphire last Friday and he is our winner this week of the $20 voucher from Coffs Bait & Tackle. Around the rocks the tailor were off but the salmon were biting, again mainly north of the Harbour. Gallows and the South wall have been steady for bream and the odd tailor. Mutton Bird Island is fishing the best as usual and He's rewardind most who make the trek accross the top. The Estuaries have fished a little better in the week gone. Luderick are abundant as are Flat Head, Bream, Whiting, you name it you can literally see for yourself the water is that clear. Kieth Frost tells me he's been dropping yabbies in the faces of some big whiting in Coffs Creek but they are just not biting. Hilly at Sawtell is still picking up his share of crabs from Bonville Creek. He tells me that the crabs coming through now often have one claw and the theory goes that these are the stragglers that lost the fight during breeding. Handy tip too from hilly is to leave a jenny in the trap to attract the big males. To think of it I could probably write half a book on the tips and tricks I have generously been giving since taking on the bait shop and i am more than happy to pass it on to you when you come down for a chat. This week Chris Fagan contributes to the column again and also for the first time we've got a contribution from Dwayne Creighton who is a very keen junior fisher folk. Before i go this week i just want to say thanks to all the contibutors of this column and thanks to all my mad keen customers who keep it all going. Good luck till next week. Whoopi Yakkas Don't you love it when your wife tells you to get a bit of exercise & suggests you should go fishing with your mates!! Bet that doesn't happen too often to you boaties. The guys have had a great time this week with everyone coming home with a feed. Peter was out by himself on Thursday & landed five snapper up to the 5kg mark & a couple of very nice pearl perch. Doug, Chris & Wal went out Saturday morning. Chris & Wal got a few snapper between them, with one of Wal's going around the 6kg mark. He was feeling pretty cocky & was just about to call out & brag to Doug about it when Doug's line took off with a flourish. After a few heartstopping minutes he pulled up a snapper topping the scales at 8.155kg. What a ripper !! He then rubbed salt into the wound & asked Wal for a hand to get it onboard because he had forgotten his gaff. The BBQ at Woolgoolga on Saturday afternoon was great. Scott had just bought a new kayak from the guys at Skee Mullaway & hadn't had a chance to use it at that stage. Doug decided to help him lose his virginity & took him out on Sunday morning. Doug come home empty handed, but Scott had a great snapper around the 4kg. First outing, first great fish. Does it get any better ?? It's just a guess, but I reckon the smile is STILL on his face. Don't forget, if there are any kayakers around the area who would like to team up & come out with us, give me a call at Woolgoolga Beach Caravan Park & I can let you know when we are going out next. Ray Woolgoolga Beach Caravan Park www.woolgoolgabeachcaravanpark.com.au Chris Fagan's Fishing Fishing has been a bit like playing "battleship" this week, to say it's been hit or miss is a bit of an understatement to say the least. With the build-up to the full moon came the hope of something good but it was a question of finding the fish or picking the right feature. The numerous schools of salmon & tailor of the last few weeks have all but disappeared, with only the very odd fish showing up at all. The same features that were producing almost a fish a cast at times are now deserted save for the odd patch of bream or whiting at different times. Though even these bread & butter species are here one day and conspicuously absent the next. What fish that were present were all of a legal size especially the bream which turned up a few good quality, solid fish. The only solid hit to be had was giving a bit of grief for a few minutes then lost when the trace was rubbed through. I'm trying not to think what could have been. Fishing in a previously uncharted spot, a few hundred metres from Boambee Creek mouth we found a great gutter to fish on the evening tide but found it to be pretty much devoid of life, and screaming through at a rate of knots. Should have packed one of those grapnel sinkers... Here's hoping for better fishing next week. Junior Fisherfolk with Dwayne Creighton. The good weather doesn’t always bring the good fish, although there are some big ones getting around they seem to be very patchy. The top of the tide on you’re local beaches seem to be producing some nice bream, whiting, flathaed and the occasional dart getting around out the back. There hasn’t been much size in the flathead but the bream and the whiting have been extraordinary. The dart where big but there’s not much of a feed involved, seeing as they are a bony fish. The Jew are starting to hit the beach gutters and rock headlands in numbers. I have heard of some good ones being landed mostly off the beaches at night. The full moon is the best time to be out wetting a line for Jew as the baitfish love the full moon and the Jew love the bait fish. It’s also easier to see the gutters on the beach on a full moon. The moon phase is a very important and sometimes a crucial part of Jew fishing. If you use it and respect it, it will serve you well. If your looking for somewhere to wet a line this weekend I suggest Park Beach on the high tide. Live beach worms being the favoured bait, and the gutters close to sure being the favoured spots. If you do get out to wet a line try out some of your local beaches to find a nice gutter, good luck.
