Offshore Superboat Series 2009 - 2009/01/23 17:22
Williamstown and surrounds will roar to life next month (28th February & 1st March 2009) as thousands of spectators flock to the bayside suburb for the Williamstown Offshore Powerboat Classic. The event, which is free to spectators, marks round three of six in the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships. The Williamstown Offshore Powerboat Classic will see over 20 superboats across several classes rip around the coast hugging course within excellent view of the shore. The Class One boats are capable of reaching speeds over 220km/h and typically complete about 13 laps (185km) during the hour-long race. Other championship classes competing in Williamstown include the Supercat Outboard, Supercat Outboard Lite and Super Vee Lite.
Williamstown will also see Team numbers increase with a new team in each class. Class 1, Maritimo has a new boat being driven by Bill Barry-Cotter and Ross Willaton on the throttles.
Supercat, Team 3 returns bigger and better after their Cat outboard lite craft was destroyed at the Redcliffe round, They will have a 32ft Victory cat with twin 525hp inboards and the team of Adam Gilbert, Steve Nuggent & Nathan Heymink are very excited to get racing.
Supercat outboard, Kwozzy 2, Jim Harris & Adam Nicolls Have built a new “Blade” cat and are debuting this new boat after their move up from outboard lite.
Supercat outboard lite, Kwozzy, under the new owners Greg Collins & Jan Imrie the black machine is ready to take on the championship, Also the return of Hog’s Breath Offshore Racing, Paul Gibbs & Paul Fowlds will have a new boat on the water to try and take another Australian title for the class.
Spectators can take in the action from numerous viewing areas, with the best vantage point being the Reserve at Point Gellibrand. The main event of the Williamstown Offshore Powerboat Classic will rev into action at around 12pm on Sunday 1st March, With the wet and dry pit open to the public Saturday and Sunday at the “PMA site”, Nelson Place; Williamstown . The Offshore Superboat Championships series next round will be held at Geelong the following weekend (March 7th & 8th) and culminates with stops in New South Wales and Queensland throughout May to July.
