Port Stephens Fishing Report October 2009 - 2009/10/03 08:43 02 October 2009 Got One Port Stephens (NSW) [ Paul Lennon ]
OUTSIDE

Snapper have come on the chew over the past week with solid fish to 8kg coming
from Broughton Island as well as some some cracker fish to 11kg coming off Boat Harbour. There’s been a stack of Bream and Drummer around Big and Little Island in the white water. Tailor have continued to be in good numbers with trolling a lure around the edges of islands and bomboras the most effective way to nail a quick feed. Flathead are still in numbers wide of Fingal Light House. The tank mark off Boulder Bay has been holding Snapper and Mulloway through the week and should fish even better as the full moon approaches.

BEACH
Tailor are being caught at first light and late afternoon at Stockton, Samurai and Fingal beaches. Whiting have begun to show up in good numbers as the water warms up. Live worms and long shank hooks casted over a nice deep trough or gutter is the best way to target whiting and bream from the beach. Salmon have been in huge numbers along Stockton and Samurai Beach over the past week which is par for the course this time of year. Garfish and pilchard rigged on gang hooks is your best bet for the fish cakes. The moon is pretty good for a Jewie over the next few days, head down to Stockton or Box beach with some fresh squid or mullet fillets and you just might get lucky. .

ROCKS
Theres been some absolute stonker Drummer over the past week. Ive heard of two over 4kg and one of those was almost 5kg which is a serious Pig. Double strength hooks, fresh Cunjevoi or peeled Prawns cast into the white water with a mixture of bread and water, as burley is the recipe for success with these fish. Tailor have been caught from Sunny Corner as well as Barry Park throughout the week with early mornings being the most productive period. There’s also been plenty of Squid in the calmer bays around Fingal and Boulder Bay

ESTUARY
Plenty of Bream around in the Estuary willing to smash soft plastics with areas like the boulders at Yaccabar, the racks around Tea Gardens and Soldiers Point all producing quality fish. Flathead are getting thicker and thicker as the water and weather begins to warm up. The edge of weed beds where they merge onto mud or sand are the best areas to target Flathead, and soft plastics are the most effective method for results. The Nelson Bay Rock Wall is still producing Luderick by day and Bream by night. Shoal bay moorings is producing plenty of squid. Fish on the high tides using jigs in the 2.5 – 3.5 range, Yo Zuri pinks and oranges work best in my mind. Trumpeter whiting are thick as thieves around Soldiers Point.
