Port Stephens Fishing Report, Novemver 2009 - 2009/11/15 08:56
13 November 2009
OUTSIDE There’s plenty of pan size Squire being taken off Fisherman’s mixed in with the odd bigger fish to 5kg. Broughton and out the front have been fairly slow but the fish are there if your prepared to work a little harder. While Gulps are still well and truly the most popular plastic Slam baits are gaining in popularity, one particular angler I was talking to on Wednesday morning was telling me how he managed Reds off Broughton all taken on black pearl slams with out a single hit on the Gulps. Some big hoodlum Kingies are cruising the shallows around Broughton in areas like the Sisters North rock and West Island. Stacks of Salmon and Tailor around the on the inside of Fingal Island through to Big and Little Island. Plenty of Trag being caught up the Big Gibber.
BEACH The beaches are absolutely jam packed with Salmon up to 5kg. Got Ones fisho manager “Bat the Salmon Master” reckons the best method to catch these fish is whole Pilchards rigged with a small surf popper up about 30cm away from the pillie. Bat says that with this rig more often than not the Salmon will take the popper over the actual bait. It also works well on other species such as Tailor and Dart. Bat also beached a couple of 6’ Whalers this week off Stockton Beach around the 10k mark whilst fishing for Jew’s. It maybe wise to just stick to fishing. Whiting and Bream are coming off Stockton and Fingal with Live worms being the number 1 bait.
ROCKS November is generally a pretty quiet time off the rocks as many of your Winter species taper off and the summer species not quite here yet. However if you work hard you should be able to still pick up a few Drummer and Bream around Boulder Bay through to Rocky Point. Theres Tailor and Salmon coming from Tomaree Torpedo Tubes through to Box Beach. Squid are another options at the moment by fishing the calm protected bays with jigs in the 3.0- 4.0 size. Yo Zuri pink and oranges are by far my favourite. . ESTUARY The bay is full of life at the moment with tons of Baitfish through out the port providing a smorgasbord of tucker for Kings Tailor Flathead and Salmon there’s even been reports of a few Mack tuna wizzing around. For Flathead the best area’s to try are around Corlette Beach, The Groins, Dutchies, Shoal Bay, Little Beach and the Short Cut. Soft plastics are the best choice when chasing Lizards try some Berkley Hollow Bellys or 110 Squidgy Flick Baits. Salmon have moved intothe Port in bigger numbers than I can ever remember and I’m not sure if this is a bad thing or a good thing. They are being caught from Little Beach, the Break Wall and the Torpedo Tube at Shoal Bay. Heaps of Whiting are starting to appear on Nelson Beach, Jimmy’s and the short cut at Corrie Island. Jew are being caught from both Karuah bridges on live baits as well as the Nelson Bay Rock Wall.
