Port Stephens Fishing Report January 2010 - 2010/01/08 20:14 08 January 2010

OUTSIDE
Out wide Marlin have started to show up in better numbers with Timmy Dean tagging two Stripeys on Monday and Michael Morton nailing a 100kg Blue on a Saltigia spin reel on Wednesday. Blue horizons got out there on Monday and while no Beakies, they did managed a few ripper Mahi Mahi to 20kg. Surprisingly no reports of Dollies on the fad yet but shouldn’t be long before they find it. Kingies are in good numbers around the islands and there are still plenty of reds around. Anna bay champion Crab getting a dozen fish to 3kg off Boatie, unfortunately just like his lollies he doesn’t share them! Jewfish are also prominent around most of the inshore reefs such as the Looking Glass, Cod rock and the Pinnicle off Fingal island. Quality sand flathead to 2kg are there to be caught on the Flathead drift off Broughton and between Little and Fingal light in the 40- 50 metre mark.

BEACH.
Whiting are thick as thieves along Fingal Bay, Stockton and Samurai beaches, live Worms or fresh Pippis are your best bait for these tasty suckers and try to fish around the high tide. Big Tailor off Fingal bay spit on first light on either whole Pillies or metal spinners. Good time of year to have a crack for some Mulloway after dusk. Fish either Stockton or Samaruai beach with some big baits such as fresh Squid or Mullet Fillets.

ROCKS
The Rocks have been fishing well with the flat conditions and warm water especially for Groper. Get yourself some Crabs or Monster Prawns rigged on a minimum 50lb line with a small pea sinker on top of a triple strength hook and hang on. Sunny corner at One Mile has been holding some nice Tailor with the odd hoodlum King cruising around the point. Squid are in good numbers off the rocks right now with most bays holding quality Calamari to 1.5kg.

ESTUARY
The Estuary is on fire right now. There’s been big Kings cruising up and down Nelson bay Break Wall smashing schools of white bait and keen to hit a popper or plastic when in the mood. Mulloway have also been in healthy proportions with a few guys picking up quality fish to 15 kg from both rock walls over the past week. Corlette Wreck and Middle island are other places that are also producing Jew at present. Flathead are everywhere in the port with any shallow sand or mud flat holding good size Lizards the high tide. A quick walk around these areas at low tide and you should get an idea where the Flathead are by seeing their imprint embedded in the mud or sand. Soft plastics are by far the best way to get stuck into flatties with Berkley Hollow Bellies, 3” Gulp Shrimps and 110 Flick Baits being my personal favorites. Bream and whiting are biting there heads off on surface lures around Soldiers Point, Tailors Beach and the entry to Myall Lakes. Whiting are also being caught on Live Tube Worms around Shoal Bay, Nelson Bay, Little Beach and Bagnalls.
