Forster Tuncurry Fishing Report March 2010 - 2010/03/05 12:52 Forster/Tuncurry Fishing Report
5 March 2010
Estuary: My regular spies this week have reported that nice sized Tarwhine have been getting landed off the Harbour Breakwall on the Forster side. A few nice fish have been sighted around the 23cm mark all caught on live nippers pumped around in Ohmas Bay. Again this week the report of Mulloway is still strong with reports of 5 fish being caught this week. Again as mentioned in previous reports Live Bait is the winner here with either Pike or Yellowtail the pick. Pike are being caught on small minnow style gold lures and the Yellowtail is happy to chase size 8 or 10 standard Bait jigs. Not only are these good bait but the kids have been having a ball catching them after school each afternoon on jigs. A few Bonito have been caught along the breakwall as far up as the Co op wharf !
Still a few good medium to large Flatties being landed, however this week has seen the return of some nice whiting again being caught on poppers. The trick here is to fast retrieve these surface lures and let the Whiting chase and attack. Although at times stopping the popper for a short 10 seconds will make those curious fish attack as well – you may well be surprised at the result.
Bream this week are still on the bite on either baits or small hard bodied lures. Fish anywhere around the leases in the slack water.
Rock: Not much to report except for a few reports of Tailor around Latitude Rocks.
Offshore: Still plenty of Bonito around it seems where ever anyone wants to fish at the moment - even in the Cape Hawke Harbour. Very pleasing reports from one angler who “bagged out” last Saturday on Flathead out at The Barge in about 20 m of water. Mahi Mahi have been landed at the FAD. Local boys fishing the interclub at Nelson Bay were successful with a few hook ups and tags last weekend as well on Marlin ( sorry no size to report).
Beach: Again all beaches in the area have produced nice tailor caught on the standard 3 hook gang with Pilchards as bait. One customer was kind enough to smoke some tailor for us during the week and delivered it for us to try. Very nice smoked with “Apple”wood chips.
